GREAT Women's All Around Gymnastics final! Suni Lee wins the GOLD for USA! Even though this is a spoiler, it is well worth watching tonight in prime time.

Good grief, did Phee grow 3 inches? Context please? Was there a picture with an interesting parallax? Did she block someone tall?

Mini rant: I have seen some criticism of Simone Biles, from a very small but self-absorbed minority, some saying if she is really the GOAT, she should admit that she had one bad performance which they believe the real reason for her withdrawal, be able to shut out the distractions, and just go out and perform. Really? With all the spinning, twisting, somersaulting, with such speed and power and height, and there being literally fractions of an inch between landing it and missing it with resulting injury? These nattering nabobs of negativism haven't the slightest idea of the tightwire these athletes "walk", risking major injury, paralysis and yes, even death if they land as horribly wrong as possible. Maybe you can play other sports with your head not 100% in the game. But gymnastics? I think not. When "my head isn't in the game" it is hard for me to work. But, I sit on my ass in front of a computer all day, talking on conference calls, doing this and that. And some days the struggle with stress and anxiety is real. But, I am able to push through because there is no real risk of injury to myself or others. That would change things very significantly if I did the type of work that risked more physical injury than a stiff neck and sore wrists and fingers.
I wonder if these asshats would want to fly on a plane knowing that their pilot had lost confidence in his ability to fly a plane?
Rant over...

When Naomi Osaka left the French because she refused to be interviewed, I felt she was just spoiled. Then I gradually began to appreciate how much stress an interview can be after a tournament, and that these ridiculous interviews are just part of the bottom line for the richies who control the tournaments. That was a true "mental health" issue. As you say, for Biles it was both mental health and physical safety. Biles needed to walk away. It took a lot more courage for her to walk away than to "hang tough" and compete. Sports culture is so vastly profitable and all-consuming. Time for a few heroes to fight the excess.

Well said, and I'll add that none of the talking head whiners could walk 5 steps in Simone's shoes!!

Simone Biles has withdrawn from the individual finals. It is the right call, but she must be so disappointed. I heard Mikayla Skinner will compete in vault in place of Simone. GO Mikayla!

I was reading about the great risks gymnasts take with their over the top routines, potentially life threatening in ways I hadn't realized. Biles did the right thing.
