Where to watch? Comcast Corp.’s NBCUniversal will air 7,000 hours of Olympics events from July 23 to Aug 8 across its two broadcast channels, six cable channels and digital platforms. For the first time, NBC will also show the games on its streaming service, Peacock. One of the most anticipated events will be women’s gymnastics. American superstar Simone Biles will be competing for another gold. The women’s qualification round begins July 24 at 9 p.m. Eastern time. A full schedule of when each event is taking place can be found at NBCOlympics.com. Will there be an Olympic opening ceremony in Tokyo? Yes, but it will look different from previous ones. The opening ceremony will still involve the lighting of the Olympic torch, and athletes and flag bearers from each country will still walk around the stadium. But there will be fewer athletes in the parade than usual due to pandemic restrictions. And like the other Olympic events this year, the opening ceremony will seem quieter, taking place inside a mostly empty venue after Olympics organizers banned most spectators due to rising Covid-19 cases in Tokyo. When is the Olympic opening ceremony? The Olympics opening ceremony begins Friday, July 23 at 7 a.m. Eastern time, or 8 p.m. local time in Tokyo. It’s expected to last about four hours. How to watch the Olympic opening ceremony? Viewers can watch the opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics live on NBC, which begins its broadcast to U.S. viewers at 6:55 a.m. Eastern time. NBC will later re-air the ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Eastern time, with a special focus on Team USA. The NBC Sports app and NBCOlympics.com will stream the taped, primetime version of the broadcast. www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-23/how-to-watch-the-tokyo-olympics-opening-ceremony-events?sref=UGneIVZ3

Team handball…feels like a combination of basketball, soccer, water polo, and lacrosse. And fun to watch!

Download the NBC Sports Olympics app. You can watch live action of many sports, replays and get up to the minute news and medal counts. The official Olympics app from the IOC is woefully inadequate. Medal count as of a few minutes ago still had the US with zero medals.
Edit: annnnnd on recheck the medal count is now updated on the IOC site.

Team handball…feels like a combination of basketball, soccer, water polo, and lacrosse. And fun to watch! Have watched some of the team handball - mostly women - for the last several Olympics. Fun game to watch, just not a US thing. Actually watch water polo in the Olympics as well. As of late Sunday - we are slogging along. Taping everything - NBC, NBCSN, CNBC & USA and speeding through watching the parts of interest. Lots of rerunning of various games.

How does everyone feel about spoilers? I was able to catch some live action this morning of events that will be televised in prime time. Not sure if I should share or if people are avoiding results until they can watch it in primetime.

Cannot get the 3x3 games ... not even most of the highlights from NBC or the NBC Sports App. Driving me crazy. Everything comes at us in bits and out of order, and customized for a network that thinks people only care about the drama of the last lap of a race or the finish line, or the final score. It is making me hate this Olympics. Another thing is that they play-up certain US competitors as "can't lose". Then when they don't absolutely dominate it is a disappointment even if they win. But as it turns out, there are a lot of "other" competitors who are also thinking this may be my once-in-a-lifetime chance, and have worked their tails off, too.

Yes, yesterday was just qualifying and the scores don't carry over...but Simone missed landings in very big ways. She does that tomorrow, we won't see the G.O.A.T on the medal stand for the gold medal. As Simone goes, the US women's team goes. Individual apparatus events aren't for a few days. Tomorrow is team competition. But some of her missed landings were very uncharacteristic of her...and shows she can be beaten. And Katy Ledecky...turns out she can be beaten as well.

I agree that the coverage is much worse than in the past - prior Olympics had more "broadcast" (cable) stations dedicated to the Olympics and many covered a specific selection of sports. Now, with streaming I suppose, there is very limited coverage - NBCSN & USA are basically 24 hours, CNBC primetime plus and NBC with a morning and evening program. Sometimes one event that (as you say) they think folks want to see is replayed 3 times between the stations. And with the time difference - I think I have had 4 opportunities to see Ledecky lose her first race. Oddly enough I think I saw most of all the USA 3x3 women's games. But not necessarily in order.

Simone, I think, is really feeling the pressure of all the GOAT talk, and is clearly missing her parents presence. Just not her "A-MAY-ZING" self.
EDIT: Apparently she suffered an injury on landing her vault and has pulled out of the team competition. No word yet on whether she will compete in the all-around and individual apparatus finals.
EDIT upon EDIT: Simone is out because of a "mental" issue. Why is that also not considered an "injury"? I heard after the qualifying that she was really missing her parents being in the audience, because she would always look up at them just before she started on an apparatus. Gotta feel for the young woman.
3rd Edit: Now saying it IS a medical injury.

So sorry for Simone. So happy that NBC might lose a little revenue on this (after they first get some by exploiting it). As swash says above, bad coverage.

I'm in our cottage entertaining fam so can't watch anything. Love reports on the women's 3x3 and 5x5 if you have them.

As far as I know, 3X3 remains undefeated. 5X5 won their first game against Nigeria 81-72.

Has anyone found a site that gives an accurate time and TV coverage of events? Seems to be hit or miss.

Even when I see a listing it says something helpful like "Skateboarding, Diving, Fencing, Basketball" Then I turn it on and it is a piece on Gymnastics - written when the US was destined to win by a country mile. Bogus.
