Hawkeyes. Geez, it's an eyeball. And bird's eyeball at that. If a Husky can't take care of a bird's eyeball.....

Hammer Herky the Hawk!!!!
In spring 1948, the UI athletics business manager put out a call for new mascot ideas to rival Minnesota’s Goldy Gopher and Wisconsin’s Bucky Badger. A UI journalism instructor who taught editorial cartooning submitted the winning sketch: a barrel-chested, anthropomorphic bird wearing a block-I sweater. The bird needed a name, so a statewide contest was soon arranged….the winner: Herky the Hawk, short for Hercules. By the 1950s, Herky came to life as a sideline mascot at Iowa Stadium. While the beloved bird has undergone a number of transformations in his 70-plus years, Herky remains a timeless icon. Earlier mascots include: In 1908, the Iowa football coach brought a new mascot back to Iowa City from his father’s ranch in northern Wisconsin. Nicknamed Burch, the black bear cub was housed in a cage at Iowa Field and accompanied the team to road games. But Burch’s days on the sidelines were short-lived. According to newspaper accounts at the time, the bear went missing from its cage in winter 1910 and, after sightings by farmers in Coralville, was found dead that March in the icy Iowa River. In the 1920s and 1930s, the ROTC’s military band featured a four-legged mascot named Rex. Dressed in a plumed cap and black-and-gold blanket with the ROTC insignia, the Great Dane was a fixture at the newly built Iowa Stadium. Dubbed the team’s good-luck dog, Rex once chased a pig belonging to Minnesota around the field at halftime, and he was featured on the 1932 homecoming button. In a strange and sad twist of fate, Rex II, the original Rex’s grandpup and successor, met the same demise as Burch the Bear. According to a 1935 Daily Iowan story that year, Rex II died after falling through the Iowa River’s ice. magazine.foriowa.org/story.php?ed=true&storyid=2121Always with an eye sharper than any hawk's, DD's pregame: doggydaddyuconn.blogspot.com/2024/04/doggys-uconniowa-semi-final-pregame.html

We are going into the valley (actually prairie) of the enemy for this Final Four/Championship weekend. Friday morning off to Iowa City, the Heartland of Hawkeye Nation, to visit my season-ticket holding Iowa fans family. OY! What have I gotten us into that we will be spending Friday evening as two Husky fans in a group of 10 rabid Hawkeyes? And yes, they talk trash. Forget Iowa nice when it comes to basketball. I must be insane. Actually with everyone's different schedules, it was the only weekend that worked for months. Silver lining - one set of fans will be REALLY happy to watch the Championship on Sunday afternoon. The others will make nice. Hoping it is Huskymania!!! Bleed Blue!

Just sitting here today watching all of the sports morning shows. Funny how every commentator and every person that thinks they are a bb commentator have gone from not giving a crap about wcbb to suddenly knowing everything about not only this weekends matchups to comparing these players to past greats.

Funny how every commentator and every person that thinks they are a bb commentator have gone from not giving a crap about wcbb to suddenly knowing everything about not only this weekends matchups to comparing these players to past greats. Just read The Athletic’s picks for tonight’s games. Their “experts” (7 of them) all pick Iowa by relatively close scores. Six of these same “experts” pick South Carolina to beat N.C. State. Only one dared pick N.C.State. Can I dream of Paige, Aaliyah, et al., showing these Athletic “experts” that they don’t know what they are talking about?

Talked to my brother last night. He lives in Iowa. He asked me who I was liking for tomorrow night (tonight now). I told him should be a good game. Iowa was favored, UCONN was missing a lot of player. He replied, "yeah, but UConn is UConn". I thought, yeah, let's hope so.
So maybe tonight, UCONN will be UCONN.

A reminder to myself that this is all make-believe. A game.
It's been another great year to be a UConn fan. Lots of great entertainment. Lots to be thankful for.
