just flashed on the screen during the WNBA LVA vs CHI game - Randy is RETIRING at the end of the season.
After yesterday, I'm relieved. bye, bye. buy bonds...
sounds better than being FIRED.
Chappy, please move this if you feel the need.
ps. only watching to see Stef, Kia and Azura. Can't stand Parker at all.

Interesting - someone, I guess it had to be on TOB, had said he only returned to retire. I had just mentioned it to my wife yesterday when we were talking about some football coaching hot-seats. I guess the poster was spot-on.

Looking at the game against Holy Cross it appears Edsal has already packed it in..................................

One of the more astute TOB members called the football team mediocre. Mediocre is a couple of steps up from where UConn football sits.

Now if only UCONN can hire someone that can both recruit and coach maybe, just maybe UCONN can be competitive!

Now if only UCONN can hire someone that can both recruit and coach maybe, just maybe UCONN can be competitive! Debbie Downer, here. It's a nice thought, but not likely. No top recruits are going to consider UCONN, when there are a hundred better options. No conference. No recent history. Not much support from fans. Minimal NIL options. No national TV. No fantastic stadium. No tradition of football excellence. No coaching continuity. Not enough other talent to win, even if one player became Heisman-worthy. Getting to money-generating level in football requires not one, but all of those things. Most of them take years to attain, and many cost big money, too. Unless there is a conference willing to shell out for several years, and a committment from the school administration ... and the state legislators, then it's not worth even trying. Settle into the lower tier and just have fun. Try to break even and celebrate when you do.

True, but this affects the basketball teams, which are UConn's glory (along with field hockey and polo, I suppose). Imagine if UConn could manage to get good enough in football to get into the ACC, and play basketball in that conference....How fantastic would the ACC be? It does take a huge commitment to reverse football mediocrity (or worse as Rocky suggested ). I can't believe the UConn athletic budget could sustain that commitment. Probably, you'd need a donor willing to pony up (say) $25-50M to endow coaching positions and the like.

Yes; even though I despise FSU, I was hoping for a Seminole victory....................... Not to worry because the UConn Women will throttle the lady leprechauns in the very near future!

This change of plans I believe may signal that the AD never signed off on his end of the year retirement. Putting the guy in charge of defense in charge of the show, well let's just say we'll see.

Edsall shafted UConn when he left for his "dream job" at Maryland. He forced his star running back to tell the team, after the Fiesta Bowl loss, he was jumping to the NFL and then he (Edsall) immediately snuck off into the night with nary a word himself. He indicated at the time it wasn't a done deal but he never came back to say a proper goodbye to the team and explain to them why he was leaving. Left the team hanging and lead to the abysmal hiring of Pasqualoni and then Diaco. I never understood why they hired him back other than he probably came cheap. Fool me once, shame on you... Now he pulls this sucker punch of a right hook that came out of nowhere, and apparently caught Benedict completely off guard and flat footed. Did Edsall REALLY think Benedict would let him finish out the season? How could he possibly lead the team or recruit being a lame duck coach?
UConn did the right thing. I have no doubt that Benedict said "Leave now and don't let the door hit ya on the way out".
Let's see what the interim head coach can do. He certainly can't do any worse than "Rancid Pretzel" (as my youngest son always called him...and he was in college!).

Edsall as consultant. What a joke.

Consultant? What can he possibly provide guidance on? No one needs to be consulted on how to lose, which from my view is the only thing he excelled at. Edsall proved in his first tenure and his second that he is not at all flexible, rigidly refusing to make changes based on input from his assistant coaches. I have heard that many of the coordinators made recommendations to Rancid Pretzel to improve things and he flat out ignored them. Why in the name of all that is holy would anyone take his recommendations?
This is a move to "save face" for Edsall. My guess? He is a consultant in name only and no one will consult with him on anything.

Maybe also a move by Dave Benedict to remind the Edsel who signs the checks...No walking away free and clear for old Randy. He thought he could call the shots to the bitter end, until Dave said, "Not".

Could also be a move to keep Corey Edsall on staff until the end of the year. I think a lot of recent recruits committed based on CE's recruitment.

Interesting that the 2010 Team (the one Randy quit on the first time) was honored yesterday at the game. Certain it was long planned that those 18 players and their families were coming to the game. So why couldn't their former coach (and at that time our currrent coach) postpone his departure by one more game? Also, Coach Spanos sadly lost his father to the virus just after he was appointed to fill Randy's slot opened by retirement/resignation/whatever. My point? Edsal the Edsel walked (again) on his former players, and his current players. Also can't believe Randy was unaware about Coach Spanos father being so ill. It looks like the Randy channel is on 24/7/365. Everyone associated with the football program deserved better from Randy, IMHO.
