I'm watching the 2004 UC - UT game, and am thinking that Maria suffered by comparison following the all-time GREAT Sue Bird. No one could touch Sue, but Maria was a good point guard. She was careful with the ball and not only got the team into their sets, but did a very nice job of distributing.
If we compare her to either Sue or Diana, of course she's going to come off as a weak sister. But on any other team she would have been a star. Well, most other teams.
One of the things I'm noticing is how hard she plays. Yup, hindsight is better than 20/20. hahaha

And Maria sure could shoot the 3!

I also watched that 2004 game, right after watching the 2001 game, and I worry after re-living the worst officiated and worst homer biased game I ever saw. How will tonight's game be officiated?

Oh, no, that's another source of worry I hadn't yet considered. I loved Maria...just amazing. So solid. She's short but she's slow. That was a good one.

yeah, that 2004 game was awfully officiated, and the "color commentator" was so biased it was like watching the news these days. opps, sorry 'bout that!

Until she walked by me in the Civic Center concourse. And she was taller than me by about a foot! It is all in perspective. You don't really get a sense for how tall they are until you see them in a real world environment. I remember seeing Sveta, Sue, and a few others (maybe Swin and Asjha) walking in Buckland Hills mall. They were hard to miss...so many tall women walking in a group. My husband saw Kara Wolters shopping in the store he worked in at the time and said you really can't appreciate how tall she is until you actually see her in person. Outside of the shortest of the short players, most of the other players tower over my 5'5" frame (or 5'4 1/2 at my last physical).

I know, I "used to be 5'4". 5'3 now at my last physical. I feel taller, tho!

When I think of Maria I tend to recall her at the free throw line in the NCAAs. She rarely missed but she missed this one , turned her head to the right with a sour look and had a little monoloque with herself that began with Sh!t.

Here's food for thought. Maria played the most on the team over 38 minutes and had 0 turnovers in the 2003 championship game. She played about 37 minutes and had only 1 turnover in the 2004 championship game.

Underappreciated by who(m)? I can remember only one poster that constantly ragged on Conlon. It seemed like everyone was a Conlon fan.

Truly the thing that I remember best about Maria was she was unflappable no matter what was thrown at her.
