Melting down and handing out Bans over any political talk. She’s done with giving a gracious warning ha ha. Although I agree with leaving politics out of these boards when I see Nan meeting down It brings a happy tear to my eye ha ha.

If she kept it a UConn Board, she wouldn't have had to deal with that crap

I'm a fan of no political talk so unsympathetic to Nan, but I understand there may be more to this than meets the eye.

As I think I've mentioned before, my take is that all three mods (at least there were three when I was over there) are very much under the gun of the site owner, Tom Emery. Two of the mods were real pains in the butt and the other was pretty passive, but all three were clearly taking their marching orders from the boss. I left the board after Emery had humiliated a poster. I don't think it was you, JG, but it might have been.

He used to stay out of the way and just tinker on the site. That was certainly generally true. I don't want to go into details (as that might put on record the identity of the poster), but the poster used a generally innocuous phrase (it had nothing to do with race, gender, religion etc. or anything that we today are careful with) that Emery took offense at. I can appreciate how someone in a certain mindset might be sensitive about it, but it was clearly not meant to offend. Emery made the poster seem very small and mean. I pointed out that the phrase is perfectly acceptable, that I use it myself even though it might apply to me as well, and then I quit the board.

Well, not knowing what was said, yet knowing Tom as I do, I can see that there may be some subject matter/insults that would anger him. But they are few and far between, and like I said, Tom doesn't generally stick himself into the conversation, so.....

Well it appears Tom Emeryboard has closed their "Cesspool" and politics is banned once again??? Probably a good thing since TOB is famous for arguments over basically nothing!! Maybe he can try again in the future under the thread septic tank, but advertising revenue might suffer.....LOL??? Here's some of Tom's thoughts: Cesspool closed until further notice • Thread startertemery • Start dateJan 9, 2021 Under no circumstances is politics to be discussed anywhere on this site outside of direct messages. Start a group DM with whoever you like, but nothing is to be posted publicly. My God the conspiracy theorist need to give it a rest. Please don't contact me. This has nothing to do with the current political climate. Politics in general became more trouble than it's worth long ago. Left vs right isn't the trouble. Politics, regardless of the topic, has become an increasing greater problem as far as ad contracts are concerned. I have other priorities, and at least for now, the off topic board is gone. I'll talk to the admin and mods here in a few days. If they believe a non political off topic board is doable, it'll be considered.

Interesting, Ken. Just to say that Emery's intervention with another poster that was for me the final straw had nothing to do with politics.

I got a kick out of her "I'm done with you people". How fricken' arrogant is that? She has whined for years about how difficult it is for her to keep everyone in line - why doesn't she just quit? If it's such a PITA why keep doing it? The answer is obvious.

If it's such a PITA why keep doing it? The answer is obvious. Admins/mods get paid over there I think. And Temery’s post reveals the real reason for closing the cesspool. Ad revenue is impacted. As Kim says, it is the almighty dollar. Which is also why they are so welcoming to, and protective of, fans of other teams. The more members, the more they can charge for those ad contracts. This was one of the main reasons I went with a free forum when building the site. And that I am cheap. You can opt to go ad-less here if you want, but I don’t want to be beholden to others to monitor content...and don’t feel the need to be overtly welcoming to opposing fans. We are a UConn women’s basketball forum, first, last and always. Not that I disagree with the politics ban because in this current environment things get out of control quickly. Most people here are respectful of each other, and are able to exercise self control and stay on topic of basketball. I know we have members across the political spectrum, but staying on the focus of our wonderful UConn Huskies keeps this a safe, happy place for everyone. Thank you all for being respectful contributors - and Husky fans.

Temery in a nutshell. The almighty click $$.
Don't miss that place for a minute.
Thank you all, for the wonderful board we have here! Particularly to Chappy, who is a rock to us all.

For the last several years the mods have let politically flavored threads run for a while IF the flavor was left of center. A few brave souls would protest this double standard and the thread would go down. I have no idea what produced Nan's last warning shot, but the double standard didn't help.

I know we have a spectrum of political ideals here, and I keep mine to home because I don't want to stir up my friends on the board whom I perceive to be of a different stripe from mine. Interesting, isn't it?

Interesting, isn't it? You're right. You just never know. Politics can break up families in the current poisonous political battle, so best to keep it out of our comfy basketball home.

Agreeing with both Semper and Rocky. I'm all for peace in our little kingdom, unless we are having a spirited basketball discussion.
