I didn't watch the game but I was following the play-by-play. I have no idea what happened because Stanford was picked to beat Colorado by 14. Colorado tried to lose the game. With under a minute left Colorado went to the free-throw line and missed two free throws, either which would have won the game in regulation. Then in overtime they missed more free throws but they had a three with a minute and 1/2 left but gave them a two point lead. Watching the play-by-play was frustrating, because the play-by-play said end of first overtime but didn't go final for a long time. It turns out that someone was fouled with under a second left on the clock in Colorado hit two free throws but it was weird seeing zero time left in the game and the score changing.

We are watching the Lville vs FL State game and keeping an eyeball on this via play by play. I hear your frustration.

It fries me (a little) that they are talking L'ville taking the #1 spot. Had they played UConn, different story I think.

NC State may be even more fried. At least they have a vote for #1

I hurried over here as soon as I heard Colorado was leading. Figured I’d see a thread.
Louisville has played a lot more games than we have. I think in this season nothing counts until the tournament, if then.

Hey David,
Colorado was five and six coming into this game. When's the last time the number one team in the nation lost to a team with an under 500 record (after January in case the some odd situations like the number one team losing to someone 0-1 in November)

Who cancelled the L'ville/UConn game? asking for a friend As an aside, the commentary in the L/Ville FL St game is terrific for an ESPN game

I didn't check the entire roster, but I checked all the starters for Stanford to see if anyone was missing and they all played. What on earth happened? it isn't even that their shot was off as Stanford hit 42% of the field goals. They also outrebounded Colorado. Colorado did better on threes. I'm guessing Colorado is more aggressive. Their free throw shooting wasn't as good as Stanford but they got to the line 10 more times. Which may mean that missed free throws almost cost them the game, but made free throws won them the game.

This was the second consecutive season that Stanford lost to an unranked team as No. 1.

semi-traditional, when a #1 gets "knocked out" surprisingly..

When's the last time the number one team in the nation lost to a team with an under 500 record (after January in case the some odd situations like the number one team losing to someone 0-1 in November) I checked with Mechelle Voepel; she checked with ESPN stats and said it hasn't happened in the last 18 years. Someone else noted that it occurred in 1998, when 0-3 Stanford beat number one Purdue (I didn't include the January or later restriction when I asked Mechelle). Interestingly, after Purdue lost to Stanford they didn't lose another game going on to win the national championship. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998%E2%80%9399_Purdue_Boilermakers_women%27s_basketball_team

When the game was close in the 2nd half and OT against a mediocre team, Stanford has no real playmakers. Jones is a non shooter outside 12 feet and when pressured piles into traffic, and Belibi and Brink are mostly non factors on offense unless they get a layup. VanDerveer didn't even have Belibi on the floor for OT until the last seconds. When pressured the guards other than Williams have their heads down and can't see through the defense to find anyone. Colorado had a couple kids that could make something happen, Formann and Hollingshed. Close games are decided by playmakers.
