Geno!!! Perretta, the retired Villanova coach and a long-time friend of both Auriemma and Summitt, doesn’t want it to sound the wrong way. The number of wins, he knows, are amazing. But he is more amazed by the smaller amount of losses. “When I look at their records, I say to myself, the wins are great but having hardly any losses, that to me, as a coach — that’s astonishing to me,” he said Thursday. “When I was coaching, a great team to me had four losses, or five. These guys have like one. Or none. Think about that for a minute. I find that extraordinary. www.courant.com/sports/uconn-womens-basketball/hc-sp-uconn-women-tennessee-20210108-fi6jjitzuzfjrcxwbdqm5qnpta-story.html

While I like Lori Riley's writing, the headline is click bait (in fairness to Lori and not real well known, headlines of articles are typically written by someone other than the article writer). I can't imagine that saying something like "it took him long enough".
Pat knows that she had 267 wins in 11 seasons when Geno was first named head coach. While Geno now has eight seasons since Pat won her last game, that means he's done it in three fewer years. That's a lot.

It is interesting to speculate how things would look had Pat remained healthy. The game was increasingly passing Pat and Tenn by with some really embarassing losses. However, she'd have put enough wins together to push off both Tara and Geno for a few more years.

While Geno now has eight seasons since Pat won her last game, that means he's done it in three fewer years. That's a lot. I think it has become tougher to win over the eras as well. In Pat's early days, ODU and La Tech were about it for recurring big time competition. Other teams would pop up here and there, but consistent top teams were very few. Then Texas and Long Beach State and UCONN, and Stanford and ... Little by little, more and more. W could have projected probably 15-20 of the top 25 for this season without intimate knowledge of who graduates or comes in. UCONN, SCar, Stanford, Oregon, Baylor, Louisville ... We're already talking here about watching out for Texas and Duke to join that elite group. Didn't even mention ND, but they'll be back. Another group is usually in the running, TXA&M, MSST, Kentucky, Arizona, UCLA, Brender-ville... and the next tier is a lot better than the third level used to be. Since then, the number and quality of teams that live at the top of the food chain is significantly larger. Further, the level of training and film-study and off season development and focused dedication to basketball extends down the line to the top 100+ freshmen and the top 50 teams or more every year. Said another way, most of the teams that won it all in the way back then, would have to change their ways - a lot - to be competitive today. Geno, Pat, Tara ... they'd have been great in any era, but today there are a LOT of very good coaches. As a matter of fact, one of the things I have been stuck by is how much better the Big East coaches are than those from the AAC. One man's opinion, but those teams play well. They run quality stuff, they work together, they get a lot out of the talent they have available.

I suspect she would have updated some of her tactical norms too, had she not been dragged down by that horrible disease. We can presume she'd have continued to be an excellent recruiter. It probably was affecting her for several years before anyone, including her, knew anything about it.

Good catch, I missed that. However, I could see Mickie saying it, but not Pat.
