Compartment syndrome is a nasty mother of an injury. My son had emergency surgery a week ago for compartment syndrome and is still in the hospital. 4 days in ICU. I haven't seen the wound, don't want to see the wound, but may have to see the wound as they will be applying a wound vac before he comes home. Home health / visiting nurses better be able to come change the dressings. I don't have the stomach for it. There is a reason I am not a nurse or doctor. While caring for people is in my wheelhouse, blood and open wounds are not.

I was freaked to see drains hanging out of my wife's abdomen after her liver transplant and they were not anything we had to worry about - they were removed a few days after surgery while she was still in the hospital. It was just the idea.

Hang in there....and hoping for his quick recovery.

My son is Still in the hospital. Too much swelling still to put on the wound vac. I have read online that full recovery takes about 3 months. The vascular surgeon says his leg should heal fully. So that is good news. We are trying to figure out how to configure our living room to make room for a rollaway bed for his recovery upstairs. Living in a small cape, that is going to be tricky. But we will figure it out. Get him home first, then get his leg (and body/mind) healthy. Maybe nearly losing his leg will finally be his rock bottom? I can only hope.

I retired at age 55. I'm kinda' proud of that because I planned it. A lot of the credit goes to my wife (55 years married next week!) who really liked her job so she decided to keep working until Social Security retirement age.

Thanks to all for you prayers and warm thoughts. They mean a lot.
He is still in the hospital (coming up on three weeks). They are talking about a possible transfer to a physical rehab facility at "some point". He is still fighting infection, a blood clot, and very slow healing wounds, but there is progress, slow as it may be. He agreed to be filmed in a teaching video to educate RNs on how to use a wound VAC, and how to change the dressings. At the hospital he is at, wound VACs are not common other than in the trauma unit. He is on a general medical/post op floor and there is general lack of knowledge among the nurses on the correct usage of a wound VAC. Pain levels are still high, but that is getting better too.
Compartment syndrome is a bitch of an injury. If not treated timely, it can lead to limb loss and in really severe cases, death. He is incredibly lucky and the vascular surgeons say he should regain full use of the leg, but it will take time.
Keep the prayers and good thoughts coming.
Once that settles down, it should be time for basketball season. The summer has flown by. Bring on players back on campus, practices, exhibition games and the season. BUT PLEASE! NO INJURIES!!!

Chappy did it just sneak up on him or was there a traceable injury? It is also none of my business.

Chappy did it just sneak up on him or was there a traceable injury? It is also none of my business. Well, we think he was so drunk he passed out sitting on his leg and stayed that way for hours. Exactly how long no one knows. He is STILL in the hospital. Surgery was Aug 1. They have found a bed for him to do the physical recovery with skilled nursing and PT as well as treatment for substance abuse. They planned to transfer him on Friday but he spiked a fever Thursday night. That needs to be resolved before they can transport him. Hopefully tomorrow.
