I am not sure what happened, but my eldest son (the one who gives me the most worry and concern) seems to be doing much better. He is attending counseling, taking his medications regularly. Taking care of his health. Sleep has been a long time problem for him but he is starting to get more sleep (probably with the lessening of alcohol consumption and the aid of some sleep medication). He is back to going to AA meetings. I found someone who has a lot in common with him and has traveled a very similar journey and they have been talking to each other. He is planning for the future - kind of. At least talking about going back to work. That is a start.
While there is a long way to go for him, and there is always a risk of backsliding, he has had an awakening of sorts and has made some self discoveries that may provide answers on why he has had so many struggles for the majority of his life. He now just has to learn how to navigate a new life journey and learn to love and accept himself for who he is.
There is hope. There is ALWAYS hope.
Thought I might share some good news for a change! Lest you all think my life is a badly scripted tv show (which it has honestly felt like a horror movie for about 6 years).

so glad to hear this, Chappy. Will continue to pray for your son.
My Dad suffered with alcoholism and of course, so did we. AA was his saving grace, and I am always grateful for his long sobriety. I don't like to talk about it, because sober, he was the most wonderful man. Sadly, he was the opposite when not and I was his target. Once he was sober, he assumed that I would follow in his footsteps... It took several years for him to realize that he was wrong about me and for me to forgive him. But we spent many more years happily closely bonded, as father and daughter should be. It's been many years he has been gone, but I still talk to him every day.
It's a wicked disease. You're in my heart.

But we spent many more years happily closely bonded, as father and daughter should be. It's been many years he has been gone, but I still talk to him every day. It's a wicked disease. You're in my heart. It is a wicked, vile family disease. Quite often there is an underlying reason for alcoholism. This seems to be the case with this child. I won't go into details, but he had a "light bulb moment" and at first it made things worse. But it explained so much about so many things and finding the seeming cause is the first step in healing. I appreciate everyone's well wishes, prayers and support. You are all like a second (or third) family. I don't know that this will last - it often doesn't - and there are still things he needs to face and deal with emotionally. But I am very hopeful he is now on a path toward better health, self-acceptance, and happiness. He has done significant damage to his body, and his mind is often times confused and memories are missing. But each day is a new day to make better decisions and fight the fight. I am not sure if I shared this (and too lazy to look back). Christmas Eve was a bittersweet day, and while on one hand heartbreaking and on the other heartwarming, my son uttered a comment "I am sorry I am who I am, but I am grateful you are who you are". I wanted to cry from both sorrow and joy.

Chapette, I'm sure you know not to let the "one step back" discourage you. I know of someone who was in rehab 28 times before it took--but there was a happy ending.

Been looking for someplace to put this, and no joy. So I'll drop it here. Several months ago I noticed a decided slowing in signing on and manuevering around at a site bulkey calls "the radioactive zone". I discovered that this slowing disappeared if I shut my VPN off. BTW the VPN does not slow down this site or any other site I visit to any noticeable degree, though it is commonly said a VPN will slow internet operations. I have also noticed that visiting the radioactive site results in 12 Trackers attaching themselves to me. Yup 12. Not the highest. My weather channel earns me 19! This site 0. Interesting.

Does that show up on VPN (I never use mine at home, only when I'm traveling)?

I say uselessly because it doesn't remove them, another software does. It's all from Norton, which was acquired and renamed a few months ago. I'm really lazy because I ought to dump them. They charge you for bits and pieces that ought to be bundled. I'll switch next time I get an autorenewal notice.

For two years my hubby has resisted getting ablation for his AFib. He finally decides to do it, scheduled for tomorrow. EXCEPT...Winter has finally decided tonight and tomorrow is the time for the first winter storm warning of the season. Seriously. Hubby will be calling the office this morning to see if it needs to be rescheduled due to the weather. Since it is done in the cath lab, if heart attack cases come in (very likely) he will get bumped for those cases anyway. Ugh. I just want him to have this procedure with the hope that it will give him some relief from the frequent AFib that leaves him weak and tired and just generally feeling like crap.
EDIT: Rescheduled for 3/20/23

We recently made it back from 6 weeks in Salt Lake City driving our trusty Honda with a storm on our six, hurrying us along...
But, I can't resist And booked a flight to Reno (only me) and will ski another 8 or 9 days in stormy Tahoe. Feeling that at 83, how many such years are left for me? Getting to be time to grow up...
But in the meantime, gotta make the most of world-class conditions Anyway, I like the faded, mild honkey-tonk of Reno And lots of cheap eats... Leaving Saturday.
BTW...Where's Doggy's Post-game column?

But my wife feels like it is still too far from LA. CA is a horrible place for retirement, financially, but we may end up doing that. I am looking at the less expensive central coast areas.

California has some lovely areas, but I agree it isn't a financial fit for most folks retirement. We visited Santa Cruz a number of times (my wife took glass classes in a private studio in the area). Lovely area. Affordable - no.

I missed most of today's game (q-final vs. GT) because my grandson was in a musical at school.
OMG, he lead me to believe he was just part of the back stage crew. He wasn't - he was in the "ensemble" and sang and acted, and O M Goodness, he was wonderful.
I'm such a proud Grammy. And I met his girlfriend - very nice and sweet and pretty.
WOW, just WOW!

My middle child will have a booth this week at the Made In Montana Craft Trade Show. This is an annual trade show that draws a crowd of commercial buyers and the organization is picky about who they allow as exhibiters. What will she be showing you ask? Well, thanks for asking. She makes lamps, games, pencil and toothbrush holders etc out of native Montan rocks and small boulders. The colors are rich and varied. Much of her work has surface fossils too. Got my fingers crossed for her.

And so the wait begins. Once he texts me that he is going in, it will be as long as three hours before the ablation is complete. Then four hours bed rest before he will be released. If it gets too late he will stay overnight. I am eating lunch at the Panera Bread at Hartford Hospital then heading home when ai get the text. I would have gone to hang out at Hartford Public Library but it is closed due to water damage.

Skiing at 83 msf22b ! You hit the genetic lottery!! Reno/Tahoe was a disaster (trip wise) 4w drive rental that was awful in snow Constant storms closed the roads and the next day, closed the ski areas for digging out and avalanche abatement I had one day out of 8 that was a satisfactory ski day. Had to entertain myself in Reno's varied cuisine and Casinos Back home in one piece, will have a few weeks in Vermont to conclude the season

We got to the hospital at 11:00. They didn't take my husband in to do the ablation until 4:00! Approx. 2-3 hours for the procedure, then another 4 hours of bed rest before release. I think he might be spending the night. In any event, I came home and here I sit waiting for the hospital to call and let me know the procedure is done. Outside chance they will let him come home tonight. Which, if the times hold, would be around half time of the UConn game. I hope they keep him overnight. Is that bad of me to say?
