Things have slowly improved. White blood count down, fever down, CT scan shows there was minimal swelling, EEG looking reasonable. He still has been mostly unconscious although signs of movement, eyes reactive. His heart stopped during a MRI but restarted on its own before they could even give him a shot. Dad is one tough old bird.
We are far from out of the woods but trends are promising.

I am afraid the news isn't good. He began having seizures two days ago. He has full brain stem activity and regularly over breathes the vent but upper orders are irregular and abnormal not boding well for recovery without significant impairment.
Hard to believe that last Weds. He was reading books on Stripers and Clams, watching the Red Sox, and recognized his granddaughter buying a new car meant she better check to see if she had a spare tire since it is not included on many vehicles today. Not bad for a 91 year old.
He contracted listeria a bacteria often ingested by all of us with younger immune systems such that we don't even notice it. In the very young and very old it causes meningitis and encephalitis and so we now deal with the aftermath.
It has been a tough year. Mom died the last week of September in 2015, our congregation was challenged fiscally, I took retirement, found a new job which fits me very well, my youngest brother, also, became unemployed with two kids still in college, found a new job and a second better job, and now Dad's it is understatement to say we have been off the charts on the stresses assessments.
Now we are engaged in finding a plan moving forward for Dad's hospice care, ironic, yes.
I have to share the amazing care we received at YNH. Two tremendous nurses cared for Norm one had long connections with our family her mother being in my parents wedding. We were invited to stand in daily on rounds and to ask questions. Yesterday we sat down with a group of six doctors, internists to neurologists and his nurse and they spent 45 minutes with us reviewing all aspects of Dad's treatment and prognosis. My brothers and I have been in constant agreement throughout the process, a reflection of my parents. We have plenty of disagreements but never on the big things.
So all in all a terrible situation and struggle but one filled with grace upon grace, as well. Final outcomes aren't clear but the struggle moves forward and I have returned to my hospice charges in PA. Peace.

I come late to the table Ice, but will send my healing thoughts/energy for him and for you. I went through the double whammy a while back and, as much as we can rationalize it as it's time , etc., it still clobbers us and that you have to accept and suffer through. Talk about preaching to the choir, right? Still, I am reaching out to him. Best I have his first name. On edit: I see I have it.

Nothing new, we are in a holding pattern. We expect the end is near after consultation with the doctors.

Dad/Norm died peacefully at Yale New Haven yesterday morning with family. It was necessary to deliver him from his coma and to set him free. We celebrate his triumph in Christ and the feast that has no end.
