It's a blessing and it's a curse. It enables the shy Person to finally have a say and then perhaps shed that shyness once they realize that being brave isn't all that bad. I'm a prime example of that.
But it also allows people to say things sometimes quite controversial, sometimes not very nice out loud for all to see whilst the author is safely hidden under a seemingly benign username.
My advice is to encourage the brave and try to give little weight to the ones who purposely prod and poke, speak disparagingly of others, and who cannot see the forest for the trees in their own actions.

and, I'm afraid the incivility and crassness is leaking over to public discourse and exchange. Basic politeness and courtesy seem to be diminishing, as folks get more comfortable being rude anonymously.

Exactly the point which is why I say don't let any of these people get too you. and if you really don't like reading their stuff put them on ignore - its that simple. ownership and responsibility instead of running to Mom and Dad and saying so-and-so is being mean to me...honestly!
