I believed during the recruiting process she was THE ONE to get critical for long-term success. I’ve also believed from what I saw of her highlight H/S games and what I saw in the All-American games that she would be super. I’ve predicted at least Honorable Mention All-American this year and have limited reason to be believe it to be so. But I do have caution that I didn’t have 1 month prior. It was a post someone mentioned from DoggyD that he posted a while back in which there was a quote from Geno that Jana during last year was the best freshman he ever had. I rewatched a little more of Jana, so then I changed my mind and believe Jana and Srah starting at the C/PF spots too. As long as Geno wasn’t extremely over-hyping Jana and she is at least “real good,” the only drawback from her and Sarah not starting would be his concern for starting two freshmen Bigs. With that said, I believe it possible that Jana/Sarah take away stats from each other which may affect the voting numbers. Ohhh The horror of having two Great Bigs! The Horror!!! I am already giddy about Sarah and I am soooo looking forward to seeing Jana in some games. I am so excited about the potential for this team. good thoughts! However, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Ice starts instead of Jana at least initially. She came on strong at the end of last season, and the post position is the hardest to learn in UConn's offense. As great as Jana might be, she hasn't played a lot with her back to the basket, especially with the complexity that UConn's Chin-series presents. I'm not predicting this, but I wouldn't at all be surprised if it happens. Both Ice and Jana will get competitive minutes, and it'll be important for Geno to have two true bigs down the stretch in March. If Jana is eventually going to start, now would be a good time to get Ice fully established.

Wow, looking forward to seeing Sarah in a UConn uniform. Glad I got to see this. A friend from Fairfield who now lives in Debrecen is currently working at this tournament. As a longtime UConn fan, I certaiinly hope she’s had the opportunity to meet and chat with Sarah.

Jazzy for the win. Even though Sarah missed her shot, she clearly took it on herself down the stretch. Love that!

What a great game!!! Davidson hit the game winning 2 (three) point shot to win 21-19. Japan was tough.
Strong is an impossible matchup for smaller players and will take the bigger players outside and will drive by them.
I don't see how she doesn't start at the four to replace Aaliyah.

I know the main point is the game but this is yet another example where I think they ought to revise the rules. The concept is you have four players with only three available to play at any time, but I've seen many other examples were player is too injured to play which means the remaining three have to play full-time. Why not consider a five person roster? even an alternate that only plays if one of the four cannot play... US men playing with only three, too.

There is a maturity to her game as well. not rushed. Cool under pressure.

If Jana is eventually going to start, now would be a good time to get Ice fully established. There will be other factors involved in the decision too. Geno has already come clean with Ice's confidence ruts, and she has admitted it herself. Does Geno try and build her confidence early ? This can also backfire if she starts out poorly. That's why Geno makes the big bucks. I do however believe Jana knows the system pretty well, or should by now. I think Jana is very skilled and very athletic , and there's that size. It will be interesting watching it develop.

Nykesha’s nickname among the other players was precious, no princess. Of course in the era of NIL, maybe nickname could be priceless. When Sarah hits a shot, they could play Money, by Barrett Strong.

My recollection ... or maybe I dreamt it ... is that Nykeesha may have suffered from depression. Geno needed to build her up rather than tear her down to get the most from her abilities. Sue and D needed to be challenged to push them to be better. So, that's what he gave them (Rebecca, too). They saw that dichotomy as unfair ... which successfully pushed them even harder.

Dan Connolly. Paywall? I dunno, so only a bit of it.
UConn freshman Sarah Strong added another gold medal to her collection, helping Team USA win the FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup in Debrecen, Hungary. She earned MVP honors at the tournament after averaging 6.9 points per game (shots inside the arc only count for one point, shots behind the arc count for two) during the Americans’ perfect 7-0 run.
This is Strong’s second gold medal of the summer after also winning the 2024 FIBA U18 AmeriCup earlier this summer with Team USA’s 5×5 U18 squad. She also brought home gold from the 2022 and 2023 3×3 U18 World Cups.

just to follow up, very sorry to post that Arianna Robinson is out for the season at Duke. Last year Ciera Toomey blew out her knee and was lost to UNC for her freshman year.
Both were bigs that had been heavily recruited by UConn.

IIRC (always a crap shoot at this age), I was on the UConn campus around 8 or so years ago and saw a poster announcing that Nykeesha was going to give a talk on depression.
