It was all over media today that Paige is the top NIL earner. This from Dan Connolly: On Monday, the UConn superstar was named the NIL Store’s Top Earning Female Athlete, beating out fellow finalists such as former teammate Nika Mühl, LSU’s Angel Reese and Iowa’s Gabbie Marshall.
The award means Bueckers’ merchandise sales through The NIL Store were higher than any other women’s college athlete in the nation. The products included jerseys, t-shirts and hoodies that featured Bueckers’ name, image or likeness.
Ever since the NIL era came to college sports in 2021, Bueckers has taken full advantage of the new rules. She’s signed deals with the likes of Gatorade, Nike, Bose, Dunkin’, Crocs and plenty others.But UConn got in the act as well. It's not a basketball accomplishment...or is it? So how long until we see a "Wall of Wealth" in Werth? :-) I was surprised that UConn WCBB acknowledged and celebrated this. It only goes to show the new world order. UConn can't compete with several other programs in terms of guaranteed salary for all players, but they can use Paige to demonstrate that it's possible for a star to become wealthy at UConn because of its success and national brand. |

UConn can't compete with several other programs in terms of guaranteed salary for all players, but they can use Paige to demonstrate that it's possible for a star to become wealthy at UConn because of its success and national brand. I think UConn can compete $$$-wise with anyone. A large portion of that football money that looks so enormous goes right out the door. At 25K per player football is very expensive to run. I understand the worry that talent will follow the money but then I look at who UConn has signed in recent years. Injuries notwithstanding UConn has clearly out-recruited the rest of the country combined in signing No 1 recruits in recent years. Bueckers is the best PR rep UConn can get. Every 12 year old girl who plays dreams of being her in the final four when they shoot in their driveways. |

That's all I mean by guaranteed salaries. Yes, UConn is getting great players without it. But there is still some underlying tensions, which is why Geno recently made a personal appeal to fans to donate $500k for the team (last time I looked, they had received under $10k). There are independent UConn NIL collectives that are helping out, too. We don't know the shortfall, between what UConn would like to offer and what it can offer.
