The Athletic, so unclear to me about a paywall. Taking only a bit. For the survey, click to expand. I don't think I can put both attachments in the same post, so next post has the other survey. We asked 95 NCAA Tournament players, including 85 in the Sweet 16, questions about their sport. They were granted anonymity to be as candid as possible without fear of repercussions. Some players abstained from answering certain questions. To play for. Click to expand

Both these surveys seem to me to be a pretty accurate reflection of public opinion: that, in this era, Dawn is the new Geno: the person who manages to connect to players without coddling them, gains their respect, and makes them better. And Kim is the new Kim.

Bet the same two that WANTED to play for Mulkey are the same two who DON'T want to play for the GOAT, Geno.

I just read that a young lady from Albuquerque, Isabella Hines (known as Bella) (#31 on ESPN's recruit list for 2025) committed to LSU for the class of 2025. But what makes it interesting is her comment quoted in this morning's Albuquerque Journal that "My personality just fits LSU." That definitely drew a long breath from me. She is also quoted in an online article: "ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico’s top recruited high school athlete has made her decision. With over 30 Division I offers, Eldorado point guard Bella Hines was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country for the class of 2025. On Tuesday, she narrowed the field down to one as she revealed that she would be taking her talents to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to play for the LSU Tigers. “Honestly, it just felt like a second home,” said Hines. “Their coaching staff, I’m super close with. I’ve built a special relationship with every coach on the staff and then just their community and their culture out there is just super cool to be around.”" www.krqe.com/news/community/bella-to-the-bayou-eldorado-guard-commits-to-lsu/

Thanks! I'm sure it's all down to Gary Redus II, who is Kim's recruiter. He really connects with players (also connects with super donors to create NIL opportunities for the players). He's the guy behind it all.

Seems odd that out of all the S16 teams they got 85 responses. 16 times 15 = 240 players in the S16. (roughly) Did they only ask 85 or did they ask everyone and get 85 answers?
I'm wondering if LSU has been having trouble with their recruiting and Mulkey's ranting over the WaPo and LA papers was her way of blaming others for what may be a rejection of her coaching style by a lot of elite recruits.

I've forgotten most of what I ever knew about political polling, but I'm guessing a 33% response is pretty much ballpark a good return rate.

The big takeaway here, it seems to me, is that Kim Mulkey was the second most 'popular' coach a year ago, but only got 2 votes out of 80 (or whatever) this year.
A good showing for Geno, I think. Just as he is only interested in players with certain qualities, it makes sense that players who come up short on those qualities might not enjoy playing for him. I don't think he cares about nabbing every 'top' player; but he cares very much about landing the players who he believes to have the qualities -- unselfishness, passing ability, an understanding that defense is just as important as offense, a 'team first' personality, and the humility and wisdom to know that they don't know it all - that he values most highly,
A little odd that the Virginia Tech coach is third on the list -- but his top player, Amoore, is looking for greener (perhaps in more ways than one) pastures.

I admit to wondering if she knew before his news became known
