Someone asked about margin of victory in the sweet 16 compared to last year. Let's see if I can get this graphic to post but the geek summary is that it depends on the metric. The average margin of victory in 2023 in the eight sweet 16 games was 10.25 points while the average for 2024 is 10.375. Very darn close with a slight increase in 2024. However, averages can be affected by outliers, and the 21 point margin by Iowa along with the 22 point margin by Texas skew the results. A better metric for this purpose is median. In 2023 the median margin of victory was 10 points. In 2024 it's down to 8.5, so if you had the sense that this year's games were closer, that's consistent with the median. Another way of looking at it is that in 2023 there were three games ending with the single-digit margin of victory, while in 2024 there were five games with a single digit margin of victory.
