I don’t agree with starting Amari. Texas has two 6’4” starters. But I still haven’t seen enough.
I think we need to get points in transition. We need to speed up Texas somehow.
I agree on Q. Not sure why Geno hasn’t played her more. The nc state game proved that she can get hot. We need that.

We need 30 from Paige against good teams. I hope Paige comes out early and is aggressive for her offense. I don’t want us to fall into a hole; I want use to be in the game. 👍

I'm on a personal mission to not be critical. I think Qadence has a lot of potential but there is a lot of work still to do. I think KK and Ashlynn are more college ready. I would love nothing better though for Q to be a good shooter and rebounder as that's what we need. Maybe some games she will be.
I'm not even going to discuss Nika thank you very much....
We don't have very good solutions right now and I challenge anyone to say this is a top 4-5 team now. At best we are around #6. That's OK. This is a rebuild year with an attempt to go as far as we can in March and be happy with it. Maybe in a hot shooting sequence of games all the way.
I'm personally praying Ayanna gets healthy soon and can at least rebound and defend for us. Quickness matters. That spot doesn't have to set the world on fire. It just needs to hold it's own. Unfortunately we have 2-3 starting spots in that mode. Maybe if Caroline can come back we can reduce that some.
Geno must be tearing his hair out.

I'm not even going to discuss Nika thank you very much.... I will. She is shooting 51.5% from the field, 35.7% on threes, leads the team in minutes played and has 28 assists and only 8 turnovers. Some were complaining about her turnovers last season. Those same posters should laud her for her taking care of the ball.

She is shooting better and overall I think she's improved. I don't want to go further as I'm on a mission. An evangelical mission. Probably will relapse if I talk to you Doggy!

Geno has work to do. Let's start with Nika. I love Nika and love her relentlessness and toughness. Uconn needs more scoring. Nika , so far is 17-33 this season,5-14 from 3. Uconn needs someone to hunt shots and take pressure off of Paige. That is just not Nika's game. I fear if Nika is pushed to hunt shots another issue will be created. Q has great potential , but learning correct decision making on the fly takes time. KK is KK, another PG. I love her game , but she is not going to help stretch a defense with outside jump shooting. It's not a strenghth right now.Maybe Ashlynn gets another start. Not replacing Dorka was a big mistake. Geno needs Deberry to give something for 15- 20 minutes per game. CD quoted before the season, that the team gets along great, but certain things need to change. Obviously an attitude adjustment. The perimeter defense has been terrible, but should improve once Geno redesigns the line up. Uconn needs a better half court offense and rebounding. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in a coaches meeting .

I'd love to be a fly on the wall in a coaches meeting . There's more concern:
In the Purdue Fort Wayne game, CC let herself get trash-talked by Woodson straight into an intentional foul. Lucky for Iowa she wasn't ejected.
Lou was consistently manhandled last year. So let her blow up and commit a retaliation foul: and she did. While Lou was being held back by Caroline, Taylor Smith walked away smirking. Her mission accomplished. (Let's remember that moment this year.)
Would a coach tell his players to play like that? Dunno, hope not. But some of these players are street wise and they know what to do and how to do it.
This could very well be the type of play Paige has to face this year. Somebody needs to step up to help her out.

Then let me - you seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Nika. I don't get it and I can't spend time on it. SHe may not be your favorite player, but her stats speak for themselves - but you disregard them so When she is on the floor, the game changes...her head is always up, and she is looking at the patterns to see how the play can unfold. SHe is not out of control, she is smart, quick, and calculating the evolution of the plays as she comes up the court. These are intangibles that do not make the box score, but are obvious if you are paying attention. Her overall body of work is astonishing. I think you don't see it because you don't want to see it. That's fine. Just remember that others, including Geno, see it. Most importantly - he trusts her, trust she has earned in spades.

Until Patterson can play Brady and Edwards have to platoon and UConn will be vulnerable on the glass. If Fudd and Ducharme were playing that wouldn't be a problem but UConn needs paint offense and rebounding. I also watched the UCLA game. At the start of both halves with Muhl running the offense, UConn got hammered on the scoreboard. Late in the 1st half Muhl sat with UConn down 14 pts. With Bueckers at the point they closed to down 5 at the half. Then Muhl ran things at the start of the third periood and the deficit again opened up. I draw no conclusions from that but it happened. Players were getting the ball at the wrong moment and in the wrong place. There was no rhythm to the ball movement. I saw Bueckers WIDE open on the right wing but Muhl, in the mirror image of Montgomery, refused to look right and instead passed to Edwards on the left wing outside the arc and guarded, never even looking for Bueckers. Now this is just my observations but UConn needs offense and at some point Geno has to get more scoring from the pg position. How he does that is his problem, not mine.

Really we need Paige to touch the ball in the half court on almost every possession. Playing the point guard is an easy way to increase her usage rate. Its that simple to me.

Geno wants Bueckers (plus Griffin, Brady and Patterson) at 100% in April, and we may have to put up with sloppy play and inefficient shooting for a while longer.

We can coast more when we get to conference play. Easier opponents. More experienced freshmen players. Teams like Georgetown. Providence. And Xavier.

I try not to talk about Nika and several people want to revisit it anyway. Oh well.
Linkster had a valid point above regarding the Ucla game. Nika and point and we got hammered. Paige at point, mainly running pick and roll plays, and we make a comeback. It was a pattern all game. paige at point was optimal and it wasn't even close.
We need major change as Geno has been an outside shooting team for a while and now we just don't have that advantage. We've been a well rounded team of talent in every position and now we need scoring mainy from Aaliyah and Paige. A problem with Paige at point is that maybe she's not healthy enough to carry that load right now. But we can't win against top teams without it. We need Paige in Caitlin Clark mode. It's obvious.
To her credit Nika is scoring at a higher percentage than before and turnovers are down. She's playing well. At the same time she has more PT than anyone else on the team. Is that warranted really? She has 4 steals which is like .66 per game when we probably should expect around 1.5 steals a game from her. Her defense has been solid though overall.
Unfortunately we need that offense this year and it just isn't in her. I don't see it anywhere else though either.
I say roll the dice with Ashlyn more and KK more and even Qadence more. I think they all have more potential offensively. We need Paige at point and Nika is just not an ideal 2 or 3.

Re: Nika - JUST STOP IT! Geno says he needs her leadership on the floor, and if it's good enough for coach, it should be good enough. Paige needs to score and Nika needs to steer the ship while Paige snipes. There is no one else who can give the leadership the frosh and redshirts need and still have Paige free to be Paige. You pretend to be giving Nika credit, and you are really damning her with faint praise. You do not read the room well, but you likely have not noticed.

The Nika/Paige question has resulted in a division in the fanbase. It is not just a question at this message board. It is a question on other message boards. It is a question on Twitter. I am sure it is a debate topic amongst the season ticket holders too.
I don’t love the combination. But the solution on the bench is not obvious to me. We don’t have another shooter to bring in for Nika. And I do agree that Paige probably wears down quicker if she is bringing the ball up every possession. I think Geno just needs to go for it with the freshmen and take his lumps early in the season.

Before this devolves quickly, with posts getting zapped and/or threads closed, can we agree that ultimately it doesn't matter much? That, without Azzi, everyone is going to get a lot of playing time? That Geno is going to ride his instincts as to what works best in various situations? That he sees the overall defensive integration of his players better than we do and makes calculations from what he sees?
He's not trying to lose games. And he knows a few things about basketball.
My own view is that the guards are still good. What we need is more rebounding and some relief from Aaliyah carrying the burden in the paint. She needs another big out there with her (as she's always had) so that she can go one-on-one.
For my money, if it's a question of "trust the freshman," it wouldn't be a question of Nika vs KK, but rather giving Ice more time without robbing Aubrey (when Aubrey's playing her game).
But again, that's just armchair. Que sais-je? Geno's the guy.
