Abraham Verghese's The Convenant of Water. Verghese is an Ethiopian-Indian immigrant and medical doctor (a distinguished clinician at Stanford, but we can forgive him for that), one of those talented doctor/novelists that has a deep tradition here. I'm only about 1/3 through, but it's one of those books that you can't/don't want to put down. It's not only engrossing, it's food for the soul.
