So while working a security detail in Brentwood Ca (next to Beverly Hills) I struck up a golf conversation with the neighbor of my client. The gentleman told me he was moving to Florida so I asked would he be golfing. He chuckled and said “a bit”. I told him I had been thinking about golfing but I planned to take lessons before I hit the course and embarrassed myself. He told me he just might have an extra pair of clubs in his garage. He gave me his name and number and told me to call him when I was ready to start. When I got home that evening I googled his name. I was interested to know who he was and why he lived in such an exclusive neighborhood. Wow! This gentleman is Golf! His name is Roger Cleveland, the founder of Cleveland golf and now a designer for Callaway. We’ll long story long, I called and Mr Cleveland gave me a free set of one time used clubs. He told me to take those lessons and learn the game. He also said “remember, your never as good as you thingk or as bad as you think” end quote. Im all in. Wish me luck.

It's a wonderful game - good for your head and body, and a test of character and patience. It's one of the few games you can carry with you into your senior years - when I was in my 20's, I was beaten by men in their 80's and women in their 70's (yes, it says something about my game at that point). But, I haven't played football, hockey, soccer, basketball, etc., in decades - but, I still play golf a few times a week. You can do it solo, or with friends. You can do it at 6 am or 7 pm. A golf course is constantly changing - the wind, temp, moisture, the vegetation, the animals, length of the grass. It's dynamic. You don't need to be tall, young, heavy, super-strong, male or female. The golf ball doesn't know if you're 22 or 82, Tiger Woods or Tony the Tiger. You get breaks you won't deserve, both good and bad. Mr. Cleveland's advice is spot-on.

Pulled something in my right bicep area during my first golf lesson. Probably trying to “macho” the ball. Had to take two weeks off. Second lesson was yesterday. Worked with the wedges. I’m enjoying the lessons but realize it gonna be much harder than expected. I spoke with Roger and he said “ let the clubs and the ball do all the work”. I just need to try and relax, perfect my swing and grip. The journey continues.

It's amazing how much straighter the ball goes, and how much consistency improves, when you don't try to hit the ball hard. The problem is, we all have that 15-yr old boy (or girl) inside of us, who just wants to smack!
