Remember how Geno took Brittney under his wing when he was coaching the Olympics and they really bonded? Probably the best and most caring coach she's ever had. He has Lou for longer than that, but only one year. Yet, he's tremendously invested in making her the best player she can be, not only for this year. www.instagram.com/reel/Cn55b3RjAvw/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

I think Lou is one of his favorite players he has coached in a while. His only regret is that he'll only have her for 1 season.

I think Lou is one of his favorite players he has coached in a while. Agreed. Nika, too. Paige also, though he wouldn't admit it.

I paired Brittney and Lou because neither is really Geno's player. He sort of inherited them. Lou would never been part of this team except, before Paige got hurt, we just needed a backup guard for the rotation.
Brittney of course had a very difficult life even at the time of the Olympics. Lou was playing below the radar.
Geno worked hard with both of them to help them move to the next level.

The fates interceded. They knew Lou's Potential, and they know Geno, and brought them together. She makes him so happy, and that makes me happy. Thank you Fates. Thank you Lou!

Geno has a way with players (duh?), and when he got BG with the national team, it's to his credit that he looked at her with an open heart and mind. I doubt she got that often. Their affection for one another and her acceptance of his coaching was a boon to them both - and the national team.
Lou is now and forever one of His players. Her team orientation and mad-skills, her maturity and dedication have impressed him (and us).
And I have just stated the absolute most obvious facts.

She was going to be a backup guard and wing - that makes her part of the team. Her competition would have been Nika (if Nika plays Paige could have been sf) and Caroline (Though Caroline also played some PF. Caroline would have been ahead of Patterson and Ice and Amari if UCONN played small.). Anyhow, what a lineup this would have been!

The thinking was either Nika at point and Paige and Azzi at the 2-3, or Paige at point and Azzi at the 2 and Caroline/Aubrey at the 3. My point is that she'd be far enough in the depth charts as a 2/3 not to start and be essential, which she certainly is now.

I thought there were too many questions with Aubrey's back and I also thought that Caroline was a bonafide option to play the PF in a small lineup. I thought the thinking was she was going to contribute. Anyway - I'm so excited for this team. Just got to get Azzi and Caroline back. When they were healthy there was a stretch this year they looked extremely amazing. But as you say - never thought she would be this good as to conservative of a word. She's been great.

She wants to play pg. UConn has no need for her to play out of her natural position. And Muhl is a perfect off-the-bench player, bringing energy and intensity. This would allow Geno to limit the minutes of all three guards during the season. Limiting Bueckers to a shooting guard role squanders her talent. Besides, I want to watch her run Geno's offense and I think he does too. Tenn's press would never take the ball from Bueckers.

I don't really want to forecast next year too much. We have seen this year how much can change when you project things.
But I have to say. If Nika leads women's college basketball in assists this year and then UConn asks her to come off the bench and play like 20 minutes per game next year as a senior... it takes a pretty selfless player to be willing to do that.

But if she gets 25 min/game just like Bueckers and Fudd? Muhl came to UConn knowing she was playing behind Bueckers. UConn's pg situation next year, (Bueckers, Fudd and Arnold) could be the deepest ever.

Fair points, but some of Paige's best work her freshman season was on the wing, with Nika at PG and Christyn at SG. Azzi is the best two guard in the pre-professional world. In this offense, Paige can pass as well from the three as from the point.

hey folks, you're forgetting Geno's favorite style of play: Position-LESS. Paige, Nika and Azzi playing 123 with two bigs (Aaliyah and Aubrey starting?), Caroline can play 234... the combinations are limitless with the players all healthy. Ines can come in as a 12 as she's shown already, and there are enough big girls to go either small ball or tall ball. discussions are fun, even if they're all moot!

Bueckers was moved to a shooting guard position because Muhl was better at the point than Westbrook was as an outside shooter. If Fudd or a healthy Ducharme had been on the team Bueckers would have stayed at the point. There's more to being the point than passing, or even ball handling, two areas where Bueckers has no peers. But her genius is that Geno will be able to sit and watch because she reads the floor as well as he does and he has said that she almost never makes a bad decision.
