Saw the beginnings of major uprisings of poor farmers throughout the northeast US. Most history courses, particularly high school or undergraduate, barely mention the many uprisings or rebellions throughout the US. This is also common overseas, as all nation states feel the need to sugar coat their histories. Many of these men were small farmers and many had fought against the British in our war of independence, so these men were different than the 'Bandits' or 'Primitive Rebels' Eric Hobsbawn wrote about in Europe. Hobsbawn was referencing men who completely opposed the beginnings of the nation state, men who had never take up arms on behalf of the state. libcom.org/article/shays-rebellion-1786
