Let's try something different in the doldrums of the off season. Kind of like "Name that Tune" with lyrics instead of music. <In homage to Wire Chief's tests from TOB - one of the very few things I miss from there>
Here is how it works:
Post a small snippet of lyrics from one of your favorite songs. It can be a top 10 hit, a well-known classic, or a song that only a die-hard fan of a band or artist my know. If someone knows the answer, artist and/or song title, post it in reply.
NO RESEARCH! NO LYRIC SEARCHES ON GOOGLE, BING OR ANY OTHER SEARCH ENGINES! Looking at liner notes and lyrics in the albums/cd cases is strongly discouraged. There are no prizes for getting a right answer. It will just be fun to see if others can identify the artist and song title to some well known, or lesser known, songs based on just a small portion of lyrics.
No need to wait for a correct answer before posting a new snippet. This is a free for all with only one rule - NO RESEARCH. After all - there is no shame in not knowing the answer.
I will start:
He said he had some cocaine
That she could have
If she'd just ride along
She said, "What the hell
I may as well
I haven't had no fun
In so damn long"

And here's mine. Good luck.
I'm strangled by your haunted social scene
Just a pawn out-played by a dominating queen
It's four o'clock in the morning
Damn it listen to me good
I'm sleeping with myself tonight
Saved in time, thank God my music's still alive

OK, here's another one
I've been on the road so long my friend, And if you came along I know you couldn't disagree. It's the same old story everywhere I go, I get slandered, Libeled, I hear words I never heard in the Bible.

How about these lyrics:
Well they tell me of a pie up in the sky Waiting for me when I die But between the day you're born and when you die They never seem to hear even your cry

Song never got air play, but I KNOW you know the artist. OK. Fogelberg. Has to be You are correct. Song is called "Tucson, AZ (Gazette)". Typical to my tastes, it is a "story song". One of my favorite of Fogelberg's lesser known tunes.

Great, great, stuff. I am guessing early to mid 70's (My memory is fuzzy on this)

OK - love this one
"Depart from me this moment," I told her with my voice.
Said she, "But I don’t wish to," Said I, "But you have no choice."
"I beg you, sir," she pleaded From the corners of her mouth,
"I will secretly accept you And together we’ll fly south."

Written by America's greatest songwriter in the second half of the 20th century, Bob Dylan. (Cole Porter in the first half)

"The Harder They Come" Songs by Jimmy Cliff and other performers brought reggae to the masses here in the States. I saw it for the first time at a midnight showing in the Village in 1974. Truly great soundtrack. Not a great movie. But, back then, we didn't care.
