I confess to not having watched the Late Show much lately. But there was a time I never missed his show. The days of the velcro suit and launching himself on the wall, the alka-seltzer suit into a giant tub of water, dropping things off the building, the ridiculous little bits of humor and spliced comments from politicians to make ridiculous statements , viewer mail. Those were the times I watched without fail. Of course, those were the years I was much younger and could function reasonably well on 4-5 hours of sleep. I always loved how he involved his staff in his comedy bits, be it Allan Kalter the announcer, Biff Henderson the stage manager, the cue card guys, the interns...and let's not forget Dave's mom! As ridiculously silly as the man could be, he could also be very serious as in the first show after 9/11, and could bare his soul such as recognizing the doctors and nurses who performed his quadruple bypass and confessing his infidelities on the air and acknowledging how those actions deeply hurt his wife and how he had his work cut out for him in mending that hurt. Jimmy Kimmel aired a repeat last night, and he implored his viewers to watch Dave last night in a very emotional bequest. I am glad the Tonight Show went with Leno instead of Dave. No way would NBC let Dave do all the crazy things he did. Things worked out the way they should have. I haven't watched last night's finale yet. I will this weekend. I did hear it was going to run long so updated the dvr so it recorded the entire show. Stephen Colbert has some mighty big shoes to fill. They may never be filled... Thanks for the memories, Dave. Enjoy retirement!
