Remington is "voluntarily" recalling millions of copies of its 700 rifle series for possible trigger mechanism replacement. The initial announcement came out last December. For decades Remington has vociferously denied any problems with the trigger mechanism despite demonstrations of it's propensity to "drop the hammer" through a variety of movements with the gun, chiefly activation or deactivation of the safety. In 2011 CNBC did an expose' which revealed that the company knew it had problems with the trigger before it went into production over 7 decades ago! Gus Barber, a local resident here in Southwest Montana had been instrumental in bringing these problems to the public eye and CNBC after his wife killed their son inadvertently when she moved the safety to initiate unloading her rifle and it fired, went through a trailer and struck her young boy behind it. Why the recall now? A class action settlement as Remington realized they were circling the drain. Even now Remington's recall insists the issue is not trigger design, but: " A Remington investigation has determined that some XMP triggers might have excess bonding agent used in the assembly process. " Bull poo. For more on this see www.cnbc.com/id/102236497 and www.cnbc.com/id/.
Even though I am a registered owner of a 700 I received no notification from the company, but just stumbled into recall information.
I'll never buy another Remington gun product. After the recall is completed I'll unload the rifle to some gun store or private sale. Any takers?
