I suspect they also supply compression around the lower thigh to upper calf. I remember that Lou Samuelson started out with simple knee pads that fell down. and then went to these, like the players now are wearing. Pads just protect the knees when you fall. Supports compress and support the structure around the knees. I guess braces give more support after a traumatic injury. Am I an orthopod? No, and you might know a helluva lot more about this than I do, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express a couple of years ago before covid.

Compression is necessary to keep them up for sure, but having had knee problems for decades, those do not appear to be medical in any way

I was at the first game Lou played, sitting opposite the UConn bench. A perfect sightline for what happened. Lou was playing defense, and was on the left elbow (close to me), when the ball moved down to the right. She thought she didn't need to be in a defensive stand, and so adjusted her knee pads. I saw that and saw Geno's reaction. He exploded, pointed to Gabby to get into the game, and Lou sat the rest of the quarter.

Decades ago, when I wore them, they provided very little support; but for me often cushioned hard contact! I would wear them for football and basketball, but also for running or exercising out in the cold winter because they kept my knee warm! Part of their value' was mental after awhile; I'm certain! BTW......when I watch basketball games today ( or soccer), I often wonder to myself: 'why the hell doesn't she wear knee pads' after a player goes diving on the floor for a loose ball or after a hard collision? Old habits die hard!!
