UConn is doomed! South Carolina's imposing front line is too much to handle. Boston - 3-8 from the field, 8 points 6 rebounds. She did have 5 blocks, all against the 5'5" NCST guards. Saxton - 1-2 from the field, 2 points, 1 reobond. Amihere - 4-6 from the field, 9 points, 5 rebounds. And that monster 6'7" transfer from Syracuse? 1-1 from the field, 2 points and 4 rebounds. I was impressed with their guard play. They scored 45 of their 66 points. True. Not overly-impressive. But in all fairness, it was a first game...and against a nationally ranked team and playing away from home. I couldn't catch much, but wow, Amihere looks like she's regained form. What a weapon to match with either Boston or Cardoso. Diamond Johnson and Crutchfield really struggled in the NC State back court, and they shot a combined 3-17 & 0-9 from 3 point range? Their highly-touted freshman guard - Hayes - was introduced to us by the male announcer as having scored over 3,000 points in high school! She was a bust during her 8 minutes of rough play! She started out great by getting a foul call driving to the basket, but she missed BOTH free throws? How the hell do you score so many points during high school and not make your free throws! Maybe freshman opening day jitters? Then she had 2 quick turnovers and was back warming the bench! So the SC back court was better, but they had as many turnovers as assists! The 9 blocked shots and athleticism of SC really threw a wrench in the NCS offense! State needed quicker ball movement, more cutting, quicker shots and better shot selection! Cunane getting that very early foul was also a start of something bad for her team? NCS had more new people in their starting lineup than did SC and I think they'll get much better over the next few months! Their coach opined after the loss that they were a work in progress and I agree! SC looked good, but we match up very well now and we've got Paige! Probably our toughest opponent this season, unless we meet Stanford in the NCAA Tournament!

Good analysis, Ken!
South Carolina and UConn play opposite kinds of basketball--more or less as Pat's Tenn vs. UConn. No question that on the whole UConn plays more "modern" basketball: more exciting and a far better primer for pro ball.
But last year, Boston missed an easy tip that would have beaten UConn at Storrs, before Paige took over in OT.
Slower, stickier teams can and do beat teams with faster, more agile talent.
The challenge for UConn is to exert its will and play up tempo when teams like South Carolina slooowww the tempo. Something UConn could not do against Arizona in the semis.
It's not about talent--both South Carolina & UConn have an abundance of that. It's about mental toughness. We'll have to see which team is tougher.
