In her press conference the first day of practice Azzi revealed she has been "best friends" with Caroline Ducharme since 7th grade.
Much of Azzi's portion is very difficult to hear.

A bit later in her conference Azzi says Caroline "is probably the reason I came here. I'm really excited to play with her."
Edit: I'm told by someone with better hearing that she said "is part of the reason I came here." I still hear it the other way, though it makes better sense as "part of".

I had read somewhere that while Paige got all the press for recruiting her Caroline was talking to her about it all the time too. The severe knee injuries that they both suffered no doubt brought Azzi and Caroline closer together.

All this may be true, but I'm also thinking that Azzi is working subtly but persistently to get out from under shadow of Paige.

It no longer refers to "one (or maybe two) above all others", it now means "more than just friends." Meanwhile "Friends" has been demoted to what we'd have called acquaintances. And a big plastic trophy for all! So here's the dictionary for us old fogies (and if you recognize that term, you qualify  ): | 2021 | Long ago | | Best Friend/Bestie/BFF | Friend | | Friend | Acquaintance | | Acquaintance | known, non-enemy |

Enough of the "old fogie" references. The other day a young woman I know referred to me as "old school". It seems I'm being dragged into "old age" against my will.  I still remember when I was the one explaining the language of youth to my grandmother and my parents. And by the time those "old fogie dictionaries" appeared in print the phrases had been replaced by others. |
