From Her Hoops:
It’s odd to think of Fudd, the consensus top recruit, as a role player, but she often drew the assignment of guarding the opposition’s leading scorer. In the gold medal game she spent much of her time shadowing guard Jade Melbourne, who had scored 20 and 19 points in Australia’s previous two games but ended up with just seven points in the final. Melbourne previously committed to play for Arizona State, but last month signed a professional contract with an Australian team.
For UConn fans wondering how Fudd’s recovery from a severe knee injury would impact her shot, the good news is that despite a poor shooting performance against Australia, she hit 49% of her shots overall and 52% from long range. Fudd’s 13 threes were second on the team to Clark.

The book on Azzi was that she was (is) a generational shooter that even had NBA players marveling at her form and consistency. Now that we've seen her play extended minutes over a short period of time it is obvious that she is a great all round player. Not just a shooter or scorer, she can do everything. Is it November yet?

Question: Is Azzi a lock starter from day one? Do we know this yet?
Odds shes starts from day 1 vs later in the season?
Or do we think she’s first guard off bench all year?

The heart of this team maybe be in it's young guards but I still see the 3 seniors (+Juhasz) as the backbone. Experience matters. Especially late in the season.

I really think Bueckers, Westbrook and Williams are locks for starters. Gives Geno the luxury of bringing in Fudd off the bench without a drop off in talent, or maybe even an improvement in talent - time will tell. Unless there is a compelling reason why Westbrook or Williams can't start (injury or illness), I think Geno goes with his preferred option of not starting freshmen from day 1. Who knows, maybe end of season that will change. But Geno doesn't like to start freshmen, even great freshmen.

It is going to be a fascinating fall. I suspect Azzi has a lot to learn yet before being starter material in Geno's eyes, but I also feel she will be a quick study. I see Evina as the potentially venerable one.

Only TOB knows the answer to this question, since Geno always gets his best ideas there............ But seriously; I don't know if she'll start, but she'll certainly get decent minutes!

I'm confident Christyn starts: she was playing great at the end of the year, and she became the shut-down defender on the perimeter.
Normally, I'd assume it'd be Evina and Nika. What complicates this for me is that if Azzi is as good a defender as we're just seeing and hearing about, that'll earn her big time minutes.
I think the real question to be resolved is up front, and that decision will affect the guards. For example, if Geno sticks mostly with a single true big, whether it be Liv, Dorka, or Aaliyah, I have to believe that Evina gets major minuets for her rebounding.
But if/when Geno goes 2 large, less need for Evina out there.
I dunno. UConn's got massive amounts of talent, but I'm still not confident against teams with super bigs (especially South Carolina, but Stanford is not far behind).

If that were actually the case, UConn would have 16 on scholarship, which I don't think is possible, right? Or is there a Covid-year exception to the limit?

Or is there a Covid-year exception to the limit? the scholarship exception is only for this year, so it won't work for Christyn, et al. One of them would be sans $$$.
I don't think Christyn or Evina will stay another year, but depending on her development Liv might. Dorka has stated that she plans this to be a two-year stop. Boy Howdy, we're loaded for bear!!!

Just a guess, but I think Nika starts w/ Paige, and Azzi comes in and plays 25 minutes or so... I believe Geno wants either Azzi or Paige in the game at all times, but not always together. Nika and Paige, Nika and Azzi and Azzi and Paige...

Nika and Paige, Nika and Azzi and Azzi and Paige... +1 Nika really understands her role well. She pushes the ball up court very fast and, by her doing so, gives Paige a better look at the defensive patterns as they unfold. And she's ferocious on defense. Particularly if UConn goes zone, she's extremely quick to cover the gaps.

I'm still voting for the two teams of starters strategy.

Scholarship exemption only guaranteed for one year, but may well be extended. Last year didn't count toward eligibility maximum of four playing years ... For anyone.
