I relayed this story in a different thread: some years ago, an extremely well-placed and entirely honest (maybe too honest for his own career aspirations) acquaintance indicated that sports wags the dog at Syracuse.
It's hard for even a well-meaning president to eradicate such a deeply-entrenched mentality. There are so many ways to corrupt--country club memberships, staying at wealthy donors summer villas, etc. They all become complicit and it becomes a CYA culture.

I haven't read the story, incredibly busy at work these days which allows only a drive by to the board. But, I don't think it is so much the missed the signs as simply ignored them until the noise grew too loud to ignore.
We see it time and time again where all the signs are there, and players complain, but nothing is done. What a disservice to the student athletes. But that is nothing new with college athletics.

Jim Boeheim is an excellent example of a guy who gets away with murder. His pontificating over the mess at Louisville made me want to throw up.

Damn good question at the end of the article: "SU also should explain why it elevated Hillsman’s assistant, Vonn Read, to interim head coach. As a longtime presence in the program, we presume Read witnessed or heard about the conduct that led Hillsman to resign."

When you ( not you, Rocky, but members of the BO heim brigade) have other extremely bad examples of stewardship, deflect & carry on with your own peccadilloes!

This was a puzzling choice, if you want to protect your athletes, since he must have been at least aware of Hillsman's nefarious activities there? One sportswriter opined that the AD may have done it to have continuity with their most recent recruits? I don't buy that with their Portal potty chaos; particularly if you want to change the negative culture? imgflip.com/i/5j2j4v

At Syracuse, add athletics to out-of-control departments. (At Harvard, every dept and school is too powerful for the president to control, except for athletics! )

So they lose the whole team plus 1/2 the recruiting class. And yeah, what the hell were they thinking hiring that guy? Nuts, just nuts.

So much for the smooth transition for the recruits theory @ 'CUSE???

You can say the inappropriate touching, and it was, but I don't think it was anything intended as sexual. Just creepy. And coaches being bullies is sadly not unusual and it is only in recent years that more are being called out for it. So, if temporary, and I agree he doesn't really deserve it, Read can probably shepherd the team for a year. He probably won't be bullying them and in truth, he very well may never have done so. If they keep Read (absent learning something we don't know) then I lose the little respect I still have for Syracuse athletics (and it wasn't much to begin with).

Being a native Syracusan, I know about the incredible power of Boeheim. It once was the case with football, but no longer. Things do ebb and flow. Syracuse had a huge German population...Hesburgh was from that clan. But, in my view, he was a pretty good guy.
