Not unexpected, I think. I don't think the Pac 12 wants them all. Certainly Kansas for basketball. West Virginia would be better off in the ACC, wouldn't it? I bet this whole conference realignment is far from over. But if TX and OK pays the buy-out fee and joins the SEC this year, there'll be a mad scramble.

Agree there would be a mad scramble if they opt out early. However, reportedly they plan to wait until 2025 when they would owe no fee.

I guess that gives schools a chance to lobby for themselves. One thing NIL will do is kill the Big East. Small schools will wither and die, athletically. They simply lack the large, wealthy, alumni base that large schools have. NIL and greed by other schools is going to force us to leave the Big East again. West Virginia is already ahead of us in the scramble to get into the ACC. Probably a few teams in the AAC as well. And Iowa State will get an invite to the Big 10 before we do. It is hard to see any of these teams in the PAC12. What probably makes more sense is for the Big 12 to poach the AAC to stay alive. Let them have Houston, Memphis, Wichita State, Tulsa and Tulane. The ACC should add UConn, West Virginia, Cinci and Temple and maybe the Florida Schools. These greedy schools won't be happy until all we have are a few, two division, super conferences. If the Big 10 was smart they would try to poach UConn and West Virginia along with Iowa State and Cinci and, maybe, BC and Temple. But they would probably try to get Pitt and Syracuse out of the ACC first. Basically, the Big 12 and Big 10 will fight over the Midwest and Texas schools and the ACC and Big 10 will fight over the northeastern schools. The Pac 12 will need to add more mountain schools and try to poach the Midwest and Texas but I don't see that being successful.

Furthermore, imagine what the ACC would have to do if, as rumored, if two of the league's major football schools, Clemson and Florida State moved to the SEC. If the Big 10, and I'm saying they will, continues to prioritize academics, some of the schools you mentioned would not be attractive to the Big 10.

It is all bulkshit. They only care about money.

The only outlier is Nebraska. However, the fact that they took Nebraska who did not meet their academic requirement does suggest it isn't insurmountable. The historic conferences had a certain similarity among the schools in the conference (in addition to geography) that is being lost with the expansion and changes. To the overarching point about NIL, I don't think it is fair to condemn the smaller schools because of alumni base. Apart from anything else I think the alumni base for some smaller schools can be quite strong. Fan base and regional appeal is probably more likely the issue as regards NIL opportunities. A larger fan base with interest in the athlete and a regional appeal will make the athlete more marketable.

I've said this before but I would be very wary of UCONN leaving the Big East for any reason. Have to protect basketball no matter what. What may seem like greener pastures could be quicksand, see Big East with football. Associate membership for football in some league is the way to go.

It is a combination but small state schools are at an inherent disadvantage. But, yes, they might need to toss that requirement to grow. Or they can just selectively poach schools in the AAU.
