It will be interesting whether UConn will officially sell them as well--which would put her in competition with the athletic department. I suppose they'd pretty much have to do it in order to keep the players happy.

Maybe at Foxwoods. His one in Storrs closed. It wasn't very good, but it was the best restaurant in Storrs.

Actually, his empire is down to the really nice restaurant in Manchester, Cafe Aura. And of course the wine biz and the sauce biz.

It would be odd for UConn to purchase a license to merchandise Buckets clothing. Interesting to see how the intersection of school ware and athlete's label play out.

Not that the NCAA rules will matter much longer, but this would not be allowed. The school can neither arrange nor participate in NIL transactions. If they already sell that gear, then they would owe royalties ... of an unspecified amount ... to the player. Such things will surely be determined by courts of law for a period until some new "norms" shake out.

So, maybe the operative question is whether UConn can sell Paige jerseys within Gampel or the Student Union (giving her/splitting with her the proceeds) or whether she needs to hawk them outside the doors?

The UConn Bookstore was considered a separate entity to the University when Maya Moore's mother was selling her pocket books through the BS. That was and still is a sore point between UConn fans and the vol side. But if I were to guess I'd predict that you'll have to go off campus to buy anything with her name on it. I'll also predict that if and when Bueckers signs with a major retailer like Nike she will play as a non-scholarship player, freeing up 2 half scholarships or one full.

In fact I'll predict that if her career keeps going in the same direction she could earn something resembling NBA money and would probably give some back to UConn.
She has a charismatic personality and comes across as very genuine on a video screen. People want to be associated with her. There are a bunch of Youtube sites showing highlights and overlaying comments. I automatically click on anything with her name attached. The hype goes on this season as Fudd shows what the fuss has been about.
And as soon as they allow players to diplay school logos and identify themselves as Huskies the money will roll in for everyone. "The UConn Huskies represent hard work and dedication just as we at Chase. Chase, the official bank of the UConn Huskies. How many millions a year is that worth?
Things change. The Masters Tournament is self-supporting. The members pay nothing. If Geno has done anything he and Daley have made "UWB" a powerful brand, synonymous with excellence, consistency, hard work, blah, all those traits that others want to be identified with and are willing to pay large sums to do so.

Bookstore is even one step further from UCONN ownership now, since the Co-Op sold it to a big chain. Hard to stop an enterprising dorm-mate from selling on campus as a side business. That scholarship thing would be interesting, but what would be her incentive? More than 15 is probably too many on a single team.

Ms. Buckets better keep shooting.... As long as there are other scorers Geno will let her set up others and I believe that will happen. Fudd only needs space for a second and her shot is off. Coaches are going to go crazy figuring out defenses to try. They are 60%+ inside 15'. And they are both excellent passers and there will be lots of other team mates left unguarded. UConn is going to be very very bad for basketball. I am hopeful of 2 games against S Scar. Wouldn't be surprised if they split the 2. It will be curious to see if ESPN buys the rights to the Paradise Jam if it came down to the two behemoths.

Maybe just to be nice and a legal way to share her good fortune with other athletes. A cynic might say that it only enhances her brand. Look how far "just being nice" got Ron Reagan.

They'll be sold online. ahem. This is 2021, right? True, but a lot of us barely know how to use a cellphone. My family joke (which sort of happened) is the first time I made a call with my cellphone, I had to take the battery out to end the call. And you seriously think I'm going to understand offside in soccer?

There is absolutely no value to her playing as a "non-scholarship" player. It doesn't affect the number of players you are allowed on the team.
More likely, given her values, she might be motivated to donate back to UConn, financially, if she earns enough. Either while she is playing or thereafter.
I was reading a piece once about how some players wish to respond financially to their school when they make it "big", while others do not, and apparently there is a certain amount of shaming that has gone on historically. For example, at Arizona Richard Jefferson partially funded the basketball practice facility, AKA the Richard Jefferson Gymnasium. I suspect Paige will be a contributor back in some fashion.

And you seriously think I'm going to understand offside in soccer? Here's one for you, Bulkey: I got a new flip phone (many years ago) and couldn't figure out how to put it on silent/vibrate mode. Some of my (girl)friends were helping me at a restaurant, and figured it out. I had to leave a little early. As I was walking out, one of my "friends" calls after me "So glad we got your vibrator to work..." The whole restaurant heard her. O M G.
I still laugh over it.

The value comes from being able to offer that scholarship to another deserving athlete, even if it's in another sport. Or as they do in minor sports, give 2 athletes half scholarships. Besides perhaps being a charitable deduction it reinforces what people already like about her, and while it's her skill that is making her famous it's her personality that will make her rich.

I'm just pretty sure it can't be done that way. I suggest she might return the amount of her scholarship (plus some, perhaps) to the university while playing. It is likely that UConn already gives out every allowable scholarship across the sports. There was a big thing back when we were at Rutgers about getting to that level (which I believe they did). It isn't the head count sports, its the others where the scholarships are divisible. The NCAA has a maximum number of scholarships that has nothing to do with the number of athletes, however, some schools do not offer that maximum number - but I'd be shocked if UConn doesn't. In the head count sports like Basketball and Football, they always offer the full amount (although, some schools might ask the coach not to use one, or so I've heard, to save some money).

Are you saying that if Bueckers decided she wanted to play as a walk on and let UConn give out the scholarship to another UConn athlete (in any sport) they can't? You have to explain that better. I have no idea what a "headcount" sport is but if the NCAA allows X number of scholarships then Bueckers forgoing her own would allow UConn to award it to another athlete or give 2 athletes half scholarships.

A head count sport is a sport where every athlete must get a full scholarship and the number that a university can offer is set. (It includes football, basketball, and supposedly Women's Volleyball, Women's Tennis and Women's Gymnastics although I didn't confirm this) In WBB, absent the pandemic adjustment, it is 15. Yes, if Bueckers "walks on" UConn would have the ability to offer an additional scholarship, but I'm pretty sure that Geno probably does not carry 15 scholarship players typically. Very few teams do. This practice would, of course, open up a huge can of worms in my opinion, but I suppose it could be done. My point is that UConn probably funds as many scholarships as allowed. What Bueckers does as a walk-on would be (potentially) open an additional roster spot and save UConn some money. It doesn't give them an "extra" scholarship above what they expect to spend - it just saves them some money if they don't add an extra player.
