www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2021-06-30/ncaa-athletes-pay-victory-may-leave-them-worse-off?srnd=premium&sref=UGneIVZ3Ever since Brett Kavanaugh attached his opinion to the majority opinion by stupidly calling college athletes "workers," I've been losing enthusiasm for the decision. Just as "life finds a way," so do universities, most of which, as this article notes, lose money on athletics and all of them lose money on women's athletics. Sure, the stock market has made the richest schools richer, but most of the richest are Ivies whose athletes won't be able to monetize their NILs much anyway. Except for a handful of well-healed privates in D-1, the rest of the universities have really taken a huge financial hit post-pandemic. I worry that the publics in the power 5 and lesser conferences (Big East!) will reduce the number of sports teams, and, as always, it will be the women's teams that suffer disproportionately. I'm not against athletes profiting from their NIL. I just hope there can be a balance struck. We live in a winner-take-all world, and those individuals who can profit most by their NIL may well push to do so, at the expense of a lot of other athletes.
