Sue's discussion of the lack of coverage is one that leaves me a little puzzled. It's audience and demand that drives it no?

Sue's discussion of the lack of coverage is one that leaves me a little puzzled. It's audience and demand that drives it no? not necessarily (SP?). Does the media drive the sport or the sport drive the media? There is a perception in some circles that women's sports are still back seat and don't deserve coverage. I'm in that circle. Note the lack of coverage of the CT SUN in the Hartford Courant. The state's only professional sports team and there are barely any stories about them. We are in the midst of their season and stories should be on the front page of the sports section Every Single Day. They are not.
And this is happening in the basketball-mad state of Connecticut. Imagine how it is in less fanatical areas.

You could have all the coverage in the world and some people just won't be interested. I love many sports at the college level. However, when it comes to professional sports I am luke warm, trending more toward cold. I don't really understand it myself, but I love to watch women's college basketball, men's college basketball and college football. But when it comes to the pro games, my interest is not there. Never has been. Except when I was a child in California. I loved the Dodgers. Okay, maybe I just had a massive crush on Steve Garvey.
I do love the Olympics...even though the concept of amateur athletes competing in the Olympics died long, long ago. And I know that nearly every athlete competing in the games are pro athletes, whether it be in an established league or through corporate sponsorship that allows them to focus on their sport of choice instead of working a job in the more traditional sense. Plus, they only come along every 4 years and last two weeks and there are a lot of different sports to watch.
I do agree that the CT Sun deserves to have better coverage, and women's sports in general. But print media, and online content, must pay for people to cover the sports. They are facing tough economic times, with print distribution declining and people (like me) unwilling to pay for online editions. I know tough choices have to be made as to what is covered. And if the demand isn't there, if people are not contacting the Courant and other newspapers demanding more coverage, it simply is not going to happen.

If the women's game was interesting, more people would watch it. If more people watched it, advertisers would offer to pay to advertise on TV, the radio and in the paper if it were covered. If the advertisers offered to pay to advertise, it would get covered. I challenge anyone to present a concrete example of a TV station, radio station or paper that refuses to cover something that KNOW will make them more money than what they are covering as an alternative. If they do, they are idiots and will likely fail in the long term.
I know a lot of people, for example, that don't like the women's game because of the lack of athleticism. I, personally, like fundamentals and great team play. That is why I like watching the UConn women. And Geno is a great personality. And they win. TV, radio and newspaper folks gauge interest by attendance and sales of merchandise. CPTV and SNY knew the interest level in the UConn women.
And let's be brutally real. You all watched the movie "A League of Their Own". The truth is that males make up the vast majority of sports viewers, even to this day. Many men are turned off by the prevalence of lesbians in the sport. It is the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about. Call it homophobia if you want but I don't think that is it. If the sport reflected the general population, I don't think most men would care. It is what it is. Human nature is what it is and the demographics of the sport is what it is. Screaming that it shouldn't be that way or chastising people who you think are wrong headed won't change anything. In fact, it is likely to make things worse. People like Rapinoe hurt their sport more than they help it. Sue is blinded to that fact.
No one did more for women's basketball than Geno. If the sport doesn't get another Geno after he retires, this situation could get worse.

I have a more fatalistic view of this. Gender roles have remained somewhat the same (change is good! but slow), and, for example, there are far, far more articles in the NY Times fashion section about women's fashions than men's. They ain't stupid: they know who reads that section, just as they know who mainly follows sports.
I suspect the game that most crosses the gender divide is tennis. I generally see as many women at tournaments as men. And of course, women's gymnastics, since Nadia Comaneci, has completely smashed men's gymnastics in interest, and probably ditto figure skating.
