Well, there are supposedly 5, right? And UConn doesn't belong to any of them.
But the SEC just had a great day in women's sports.
LSU bagged Kim, making the SEC potentially the best league in WCBB, and Kentucky won the first ever women's NCAA volleyball national championship.

Don't forget the awesome ACC / Syracuse WCBB record of 12 outbound transfers!!

How many fans display a conference banner in their home or a coffee mug with their conference logo? The only college fans who ever want to talk about conference superiority are those whose wbb teams rarely/never get to the FF and yet still want to argue with UConn fans. So they drag out the "AAC/BE are pathetic conferences" story line. Notice however that they never point out how many national titles their conference has won in wcbb compared to say the AAC. No, they only want to talk about how many make the tournament. Never mind that most of those teams never make the sweet 16. In my life I have never seen a bumper sticker that said "Go SEC".

Not so sure about that the only fans who talk about league superiority are those in weak leagues. After all, Geno used to call the original Big East the best basketball conference in history. He was proud to be playing there. I think we're fooling ourselves if we don't appreciate that the SEC is making a run to be a sort of super league (I took the title from the short, late professional football/soccer league). SEC has the best TV network coverage, the biggest football revenue, the most devoted fans. During the hesitations last fall because of Covid, the SEC was the most aggressive at saying: play, and let's put fans in the stands and stadiums. It's not going to happen overnight and it will never be full dominance. No one wants that; likely not even the SEC. But the momentum of prominence and return on investment that sometimes the PAC 12 used to enjoy in sports is shifting to the SEC.

The only thing the SEC has is loads of football money, and looking at what they have done with it up to now as far as upgrading wbb suggests that nothing will change with even more revenue.

I honestly don't know how that is the case when on the same day LSU managed to pay a reportedly $3M to give Mulkey and KTY won the first ever women's volleyball national championship. Volleyball is an important sport; admittedly not as much as softball, which is largely owned by the SW and West Coast, but still important.

That's exactly right. Reflected glory. Their own favorite teams aren't cutting the mustard, so they tout the superiority (even if imagined) of the conference. Fans of SEC teams that were no longer nationally significant were looking down their noses at the Big Least, even while the Big East was putting three teams into the Final Four as possibly the most dominant conference (in wbb) in all of history. Imagine how insufferable they'll become if the SEC actually does become the top overall wbb conference. It won't be pretty.

I believe that there is a certain degree of antipathy that is inbred from the Civil War.

I believe that there is a certain degree of antipathy that is inbred from the Civil War. Whether real or not, I'm not sure. But yeah, I had cousins down there that I have lost touch with, they took it with some humor, but nothing Yankees did was as good as the South. As I say, they were (mostly) joking. This whole conference thing is something I have reflected on a bit. The Old Big East was one heck of a conference. Of course, football was never quite there, but a lot of strength in a lot of sports. The PAC is strong in a lot of niche sports, while other conferences have varying strengths. What amazes me is the individual teams that "stand out" - for example Texas in Volleyball in a not-so-strong volleyball conference. I think some fans (my wife and I are among them) do root for their conference to do well. It doesn't extend to ill-wishing other conferences. Sadly, I do think the SEC has advantages - and football strength - that at least gives them a reason to think they are "the best".
