Few Coaches! Coach C. Vivian Stringer isn't happy about losing Diamond Johnson, but Diamond might not have been pleased with the way her team performed in both the Big10 and NCAA Tournaments! Rutgers lost their opening games in both tournaments to Iowa and BYU respectively?? Going to NC State might be better for her in that it's a more challenging program and has a better chance to advance in the NCAA tournament! www.msn.com/en-us/sports/ncaabk/diamond-johnson-and-zippy-broughton-transfer-out-of-rutgers/ar-BB1fB5H1

Good catch, Ken!
This will impact positively the top ~10 teams and negatively impact the teams just below that: the ones who can recruit quality players who surprise to the upside once they get to college. I can see why Stringer is disappointed, but should a student stay somewhere where she's not happy?

I'm not a Stringer fan. Every Rutgers game I watched I saw them "playing chippy." And I'm NOT a chippy fan. They remind me of the '09 'Cuse under Q.
And that season was the end of me being an Orange fan. I'd rather watch sophistication and talent than "chippy."
I know someone on this site is also a Rutgers fan - don't take it personally. This is just my personal opinion.

Boy, I hadn't quite thought of it in those terms, but, I suspect that you're dead-on; it's an opportunity for the rich to get richer. There are fewer and fewer undiscovered "diamonds in the rough", and the transfer portal allows those diamonds to get put on the fancy-fingers of the WCBB world. If a kid is truly unhappy, though, it's a blessing - given how Draconian the current transfer rules are (for players, not coaches; god forbid we should restrict the movement of coaches). I will confess to enough animosity to C Viv (not Rutgers, per se), that anything that makes her unhappy makes me happy. When my daughter got an unsolicited enticement from Rutgers (she was academically gifted), I wrote a letter detailing that I would never write a check to Rutgers as long as the coaching situation of the WCBB was unchanged.

The greatest feeling in the world is annoying Lady Vol fans on their own site!!

Ken - you were trying to subvert their expectations.
You're like the straw that stirs the drink.
Hmmmmm, well it's evening so pour me a drink!

pinotbear - Thank you but of course I'm snowed in since it's only mid April in upstate NY and one can't expect decent roads or no flight delays until, say, August. So I'll have to stick with my Kendall Jackson cab sav but I'll be thinking about our joint enjoyment while Ken entertains us.

That weather report is no joke, 2 sweatshirt day, might have made it to 48. At least the monsoon stopped. Flowers look great, if they don't freeze.

And that season was the end of me being an Orange fan. I'd rather watch sophistication and talent than "chippy." I know someone on this site is also a Rutgers fan - don't take it personally. This is just my personal opinion. For many years, the object of Rutgers - as to physical play - was to be as physical as the refs would permit. I assure you, Rutgers is not the only team to play that way, and yes, it makes ugly basketball, but it is neither dirty nor illegal. Unfortunately, by playing near the edge you get a reputation and are risking injury (which happened) and risking losing games because of committing too many fouls. That's how I knew to believe them when they said the idea wasn't to foul, just be as physical as possible. From what I have seen of more recent teams, they are much less physical. That said, I have seen instances of teams crossing the line - and the 2 teams involved were Syracuse (pre-Q, actually) and Louisville. They did physical things and didn't care about the resulting foul. In one instance, from our seats near the bench, we got to hear Dennis DeMayo tell the Syracuse player that the next time he saw her body slam a player into the scorer's table he would toss her out. She tried again. He did. As to Diamond Johnson - I don't think it was specifically Vivian she was unhappy with, but apparently she was not treated the way she wanted by her teammates, at least according to rumor, which would match up with Viv's remarks.

And I guess it's sort of hypothetical and constantly fluid. But if players who don't get time on 1st tier teams go to 2nd tier teams and 2nd tier stars go to 1st tier teams, the gap between the two would still increase. Of course, there is only one basketball and 5 players at a time, so there's a limit to how many top players will pack a team. Which, I suppose, is why some think more UConn players will be in the portal this year yet.

Anything that vexes CViv pleases me. Never cared for her, but when she accused Geno of a made up slur, well, that finished her. It is her way or the highway and the portal is a great highway on ramp.

Hey NCAA go big or stay home!
How about this: I went to summer training camp and I don't like how sarcastic and snotty the coach is so I want to transfer and immediately be eligible to play for another team now!
or: I didn't want to sit on the bench so at the end of the semester I'm transferring to a team that will play me now!
My coach creates a "hostile work environment" I want to transfer and play for another team now!
(And of course, all on full scholarship: Syracuse University: $80,000 tuition/room & board - no extra charge for the dapper Coach Q!)
Kids come and go all the time at the end of semesters - so let them be immediately eligible to play?
What a Pandora's Box!

Sorry, but this is all on C. Vivian... you recruited a player, spent the whole year with her and yet have no idea why she transferred? Seriously, no idea?? And finally, you conclude the problem is the "portal" and how easy it makes transferring... Maybe the question should be "Who is in charge of your program?"

If you've read some of my prior posts you know I'm NOT a CViv fan and even less than a fan of the "chippy" team she coaches. But this NCAA "out of the frying pan and into the fire" transfer approach? Absolutely the "sit out a year unless we give you a waiver - and that waiver will be totally non-transparent - was wrong on many levels. But this?

I don't know what the answer is, if you can't play the same year you transfer. After all, every other college student can participate in every other activity as soon as they transfer.
Like all new things, there will be uncertainty and anxiety. And probably in a couple of years, we'll all adjust to it.

Didn't you post something like, "How come the first Banjo player from Eastern Kentucky can transfer and play for Tennessee right away?" You're right, of course. And did I gloat when 10 players left The Orange? Yeah, I snickered. And one of those was Emily. Who I don't like. But who worked her ass off during Covid at her home to drop a ton of weight and get in great shape - and bailed. I don't have an answer. But also I refuse to be critical of people's thoughts simply because, like CViv, they're not my cuppa tea.

Working on adjusting... seems there should be something inbetween not granting waivers to many deserving players and this free for all. But maybe it's just all or nothing and I admit I would rather have this situation than the blood boiling denials we used to face every year.

And I imagine folks around your way can't be happy that there is no longer any Irish exceptionalism , since every school gets to play its transfers immediately.
