ONO results against our 6 best opponents this year (ranking based on Massey):
#3 Baylor, 1-3, 0-0, 1-2, 3 points #5 South Carolina, 3-10, 0-1, 0-0, 6 points #7 Arizona, 0-7, 0-0, 1-4, 1 point #16 Iowa, 2-6, 0-0, 0-0, 4 points #19 Tennessee, 2-7, 0-4, 3-6, 7 points #25 Arkansas, 1-2, 0-0, 0-0, 2 points
25.7% FG%, 0.0% 3P%, 41.7% FT%, 3.8 points, only 12 FT attempts in 6 games.
Last year?
Baylor, 0-8, 0-0, 0-0, ZERO points Oregon, 4-5, 0-0, 0-0, 8 points South Carolina, 5-12, 0-1, 0-2, 10 points Ohio State, 3-7, 0-0, 0-0, 6 points
Good players are winners but champions play great when the games mean the most. If the goal is no longer championships then, all good. Don't be like the people on TOB.

There's no question her scoring disappears like Tiff Hayes' did in big games.

Olivia can be frustrating in some games, but obviously Geno sees things differently or she wouldn't remain in the starting lineup. Us couch/virtual coaches don't know as much as we may think we do.

Do you think we need anyone? Well, just ask around. Olivia sucks so we need a center. She can move to the end of the rotation. How rude. ONO is the best.

I think a lot of us realized that both were being heavily sarcastic.
Moving on, are others going to enter the portal from our team? It seems that there is no time limit, right? That is one of the strangest aspects of this. Whole new ballgame! You could slip in at any moment right?

I don't believe there is, since we saw last season some players transferring right up to the beginning of practice (Oct 1, I believe). Of course, that was a "Covid" year, so it might have been exceptional.

There were players who entered the portal DURING the season. It seems it can happen whenever a player decides.
I do expect there are a few other players contemplating whether to enter or not. If it happens, it happens.

On a more serious note, I'll miss Anna. Somewhere out there, there's a school - and, a good school, good program - who'd love to have a guard/wing who's an above-average rebounder, good outside shot, above-average passer, good teammate, serious about her game. People have mentioned (and, I agree) that the competition for playing time is gonna be fierce next year, and following years. I'd like to note that the two teams that beat UConn this year featured scoring guards who are really, really quick. Speed kills, the saying goes, and this year, speed gave UConn some trouble. Much of the reason Nika became a starter was that, she's really quick, as well as tenacious. Anna, for all her strengths, isn't quite as quick as maybe you'd like a guard/wing to be. She's not slow, but, if you could wave a magic wand, you'd give her just a titch more quickness. As some may recall, I'm not a recruiting-follower, so I don't know how Anna's neural synapses compare with the incoming backcourt players. But, I do suspect, having watched the Arkansas backcourt and the Arizona backcourt, that Geno realizes that quickness is an Achille's heel that needs to be considered.

Great post, pinotbear: thanks!
Yes, extra-quick players cover a lot of ground and disrupt. But here are two more threats we've faced this year: 1. Extra-long players. Baylor and Tenn (and would have been true had we got to play against Stanford, too) 2. Extra-aggressive players: Baylor and maybe South Carolina.
We may have lost to Arkansas and Arizona, but we came awfully close to losing to Baylor, Tenn, and South Carolina.
I think UConn is a pretty quick team. Certainly, when it can play its natural tempo, it's like the Lakers' "Showtime."
I know so very little about basketball, but were I forced to prepare, on offense for me it's about preventing angles from being disrupted:
How do the guards maintain, against speed, length, and physical force, their angles of vision and passing lanes to run the pick-and-roll and other 2 and 3 man sets. And how to they take advantage of their height against smaller teams to get the ball into their bigs.
On defense: it's hard to game plan when practising against your 2nd team that plays offense like you do. Truth is, UConn doesn't have a super-quick little shooter to practice against (like Danger or Mo Jeff). Best to practice smacking the other team in the mouth when referees suddenly tell you (as they did in the AZ game) that they aren't going to call it close.

But, I do suspect, having watched the Arkansas backcourt and the Arizona backcourt, that Geno realizes that quickness is an Achille's heel that needs to be considered. I think that quickness-factor plus the numbers on the wing is what led to Anna playing a lot at the four - Power Forward - spot. She had fewer quickness issues there, mostly held her own with size/strength for battling for boards, and was much better than most PF players at passing. She drew her defender away offensively as planned, but when she either declined or missed those shots, the defenders just sat back and waited. She had some trouble being in the right defensive spot (usually one of her strengths), because the position was new to her, exacerbating the one-step-too-slow appearances. It was a valiant effort, and may well have come around if not for her injury and the dramatic rise of Aaliyah. I am going to miss Anna. In addition to her play and her fit for a UCONN type of game, it also seemed like she was a great comfort when Nika was having her early battles with the referees and with Geno - ahem - before becoming his slime. I expect she will be one of the most sought after commodities on the Portal.

Apparently a ruling will be made that makes July 1 the cut off, I guess for transferring to another team for 2021-22. I wonder if some people just won't get picked up. I hope someone makes a chart about who went into the portal and where they went. Could work out poorly for some people. The Cuse will probably pick up a ton of people, maybe even Anna.

Just like the WNBA Draft with 57 players opting in and probably no more than 20 landing on a roster long term??

No, no, no.........no! Anna - 'Cuse? Well reading that speculation ruins my morning. I know it may not be relevant for Anna, but I hope she's aware of this headline from April 5, 2016: "UConn Huskies Defeat Syracuse 82-51 in Title Game" Just sayin'....... (As well, I hope she likes snow, because if she thinks she saw snow is Storrs she's in for a shock.)
