“She needs to get a lot better. As good as you all think she is, and she’s really good, if we’re going to be here the next couple years with her at Connecticut, she needs to get a lot better. I don’t mean just on the court either.”
Apparently that's from Geno.
Does anyone have any idea what that implication is? I've watched Paige's post game interviews and heard her giving credit to her religious beliefs in helping her.
On the surface, this would NOT seem like a 19 year old that needs to "get a lot better (off court.")
I hope I'm misreading this.

One thing that has bothered Paige this season is some of what she's read on social media ...... anti-UConn things in particular! Earlier this season she talked to Geno about it and I think (I don't have any special insight here!!) Geno wants her to not let those outside things disrupt her in any way! It could be something else, but I believe it's just the usual UConn hate!! Paige is strong, but she's also young and human! She adores UConn and stuff like that bothers her!!

IMO, I have read in articles that several times when Geno has been giving Paige necessary commentary - like about missed screens, or the like - she has been known to say, "we won" and walk away. Maybe this is an example of the immaturity he speaks of. This maybe what he means. He has said that when things are going well, the team thinks they are indestructible. Well, like Mike Tyson says, everybody thinks they are ready until they get punched in the mouth. This was a life lesson, and I am sure they will all learn from it.

I'm sure Paige is light hearted and down right goofy with her peers. Are we to believe there is way too much of that going on and he wants her "to grow up"? Truth is we don't have a clue what Geno is talking about and none of our semi-dead headed reporters asked him what he was talking about and had they asked he probably would not tell them (in which case he is fair game for opening his mouth in the first place).

On a really good team, little details seem trivial to young players when they're winning games by 20+ points, but it tight games they might cost you the game! Geno & CD do their best to have the team ready for anything they might face! Paige might 'get it' better after their loss and, as outstanding as she's been, she's still a young, imperfect human! She's amazing, but imperfect as we all are!!

rockymtblue2, "he (Geno) is fair game for opening his mouth in the first place)."
Geno "........if we’re going to be here the next couple years with her at Connecticut..."
All of us have been through a lot. But I ALWAYS keep faith in Geno (and Chris.)
But so much of that press conference was better left unsaid. I get it: heat of the moment, a disappointing loss, etc. Does he have a master plan (as usual?)
But, "with her at Connecticut?" Geno my paisan, why even put those four words into it? OF COURSE Paige is going to be at Connecticut! OK, you need to reign in a superstar 19YO? Well you and Chris do it! Do it privately.
It's Easter Sunday. Special for me. I'm allowed to blaspheme a little: "In God We Trust." In UConn WCBB in Geno we trust!

Zoney--
I don't know how long you've been following UConn. Geno has been this way as long as I can remember. Ironically, the candor probably makes him more persuasive to potential recruits. He goes to an incredible number of high school games and tells the players how they're playing wrong. The ones that appreciate the criticism are the ones he wants.

bulkey - Since 2012 when my neighbor at CNS gave Hillsman a "No thank you" and forever drew the wrath of Syracuse. And trust me, to THIS DAY, the "I bleed orange" fans still despise her regardless of her success in WCBB and the WNBA and her heart wrenching personal admission of abuse. I'm well versed in Genoism and his philosophy and I am totally on board. He's my guy. I may someday change my handle to "Genosguy" and use his pic as my icon. Or not.

Geno is a maestro at pushing buttons. Ask any former player, as soon as you start doing what he want's consistently, he'll find fault with something else till you fix that. He knows what he's doing and he doesn't publicly comment like that unless he wants to send a message. It's worked for 36 years, no point in changing now. The players he recruits are the one's that say "Oh yeah, I'll show you."

The problem with us is we got punched and didnt punch back against Arizona. We were in a total funk. Its a common theme for this program since the Stewie lead teams. I do think this years team has tough kids, like Nika and Edwards but as freshman and they werent maybe ready to take the fight to Arizona like we needed...
