I'm sure she is right at some level, but this Black vs everyone else is too much of what she is. theundefeated.com/features/dawn-staley-diary-south-carolina-black-coaches-final-four/When people talk about Black coaches, oftentimes they don’t talk about our actual ability to coach and to be great coaches. The adjectives that are used for white coaches are different from the adjectives that are used for Black coaches to describe them, their teams and their style of play. For me, in particular, people talk about offense. ‘Our offense stalls. Our offense doesn’t know what it’s doing.’ You can go through every game across America, women’s and men’s games. People scheme against us, they have to scheme against us. So for someone to talk about offense, I let them talk because the results are there. You see "they have to scheme against us". The "logic" of this is we are better because we are black. She doesn't see the evil irony in that. Sad. |

From March of 2020 (last year)..."Staley will receive $15,000 for winning 11 or more SEC games, $100,000 for winning the SEC regular-season and tournament titles, $25,000 for being named SEC Coach of the Year, and $15,000 for finishing in the Top 25 of the final polls. That’s $155,000 added to her 2019-20 salary of $1.6 million."
Poor Dawn... Is her skin color holding her back..?? Doesn't look like it...

She has proven that in taking SCar to the apex of the SEC and perennial NC contender from bottom-dwelling conference afterthought. She is correct, that she deserves to be given accolades for her accomplishments and not let her ethnicity become the overarching story, though I am sure there have been far too many people who have given her less credence or denigrated her based purely upon race. When she emphasizes inequities (overcome and/or still fighting), she runs the risk of inadvertently exacerbating the public image of her as a black coach over the fact that she is a great coach. There is a very fine line to walk, between acknowledging that achieving that success has been impacted by bigotry, while not letting ancestry dominate the public dialogue. I think Dawn and I share a desire for a future when the genes you carry that matter are not visible in a photograph. Hopefully, that day is not too far away. We truly have come so far, but seem to have lost some ground of late, rather than gained. Join me in resisting those voices from all corners who seek not to improve, but to drive a wedge between us |

It is as you say our task to resist buying into a divisive narrative. |

I agree with a lot of Dawn said, but a lot of it sounded like nonsense to me. She has that way of going on tangents. But I imagine if I were reading a script of Geno's interview rather than seeing and hearing him, I'd think pretty much the same.
Gotta say, Dawn is a fantastic recruiter, so her words must be convincing.

Gotta say, Dawn is a fantastic recruiter, so her words must be convincing. I agree Dawn is a great recruiter and a very good coach. If prospects can relate to her being a “woman of color” and overcoming many obstacles, good for them (and her). She is at the top of her chosen profession, nothing but blue skies ahead... |
