I read this on the Tenn board. Of course, there is no attribution, so the poster could just be blowing smoke. Did anyone else hear this? I don't recall hearing it in a post-game presser....
I think the point the other side is making is that the refs told both teams before the game they would allow a very physical game. This gave Baylor a big advantage because they are more physical and mauled the other side a lot. They were killing Beckers and tripping others, so it would have been crazy to have called a foul at the end.

Very strange for the refs to alert teams of their intention... agree that gives Baylor an edge, since they are "overly physical"...  |

Did anyone on this board not anticipate a physical game ? Please. Anyone watching WCBB at any rate of significance knows that beating uconn requires a team to impair Uconn's ability to move and pass the ball. This is also the SEC style of defense. Some teams look better at it than others depending on team make-up. On top of it this year, all of the rosters are thin. Very little has been mentioned about it. I would venture to say neither team was surprised of the physicality.

But the point here is whether the teams could anticipate that the refs would allow a lot of physicality and even if the refs informed the teams of that. |

I certainly anticipated a very physical game by Baylor: however, I also expected the officials to whistle obvious fouls during the game! Of course; UConn got away with a few missed calls, but the more physical Baylor team got away with a blind baker's dozen & then some! I'm just happy we didn't give up when we were behind by 10 points during the 3rd quarter, and that the entire team played together the remainder of the game!! Carrington and others on the Baylor team were grabbing, pushing, knocking over and seemingly wrestling with Paige and other UConn players whilst officials wore their Baylor-colored blinders? |

As the Tenn poster said, a physical game worked to Baylor's advantage. UConn is first and always a finesse team and practices not fouling. I've always thought they needed to be more physical, but I haven't won 11 NCs. |

There is a difference between playing a hard, physical game and playing "foul a minute" rugby-style basketball. The first is legal, the second is not. Baylor practiced the second, as they always seem to, and for some reason the refs let them.
Where did Monday night's referees come from? Which conference supplied them? I suspect the SEC did, as that is their style of play.

I suspect the SEC did, as that is their style of play. The Monday night refs are not ones I associate primarily with the SEC, which is not to say that they don't do SEC games. Off-hand I would associate them with the Big Ten primarily, but of course, while conferences do indeed recommend the tournament refs, none of the referees are actual employees of any conference, they all work multiple conferences. Sometimes up to 9 different conferences for refs on the east coast. |

I've always thought they needed to be more physical, but I haven't won 11 NCs. Years ago a Rutgers player told me and other fans that UConn's physicality is understated. As others are correctly noting, physicality does not equate necessarily to fouling, and UConn has always played a game that avoids, as much as possible, fouls. However, they are quite physical in all the legal ways. |
