Today, Syracuse is known as the Orange and its mascot is Otto the Orange. But Syracuse has a complicated relationship with its mascots and team names. No wonder Stewie didn’t want to go there! The original Syracuse mascot was—no laughing!—“The Saltine Warrior.” This is because Syracuse is called Salt City (and here you thought that was in Utah).* The mascot was also known as "Big Chief Bill Orange." I assume it's orange after the Dutch settlers of the Hudson Valley. In 1978, Native American students successfully persuaded Syracuse to drop the mascot. It was replaced initially by a Roman gladiator dressed in orange, but football crowds booed him, and it, too, was dropped. For a long time, there was no official mascot, just a sort of orange guy, described at the time as a "juiced-up, bumbling citrus fruit from which two legs protrude.” Eventually, Syracuse’s chancellor (I actually knew him, and I’m really surprised that he had the vision to pull this off) held a contest between the two best names: Opie the Orange and Otto the Orange. You were not allowed to vote for “none of the above,” and Otto won. As a side note, until 2004, the athletic teams were the Orange Men and the Orange Women. But orange people complained (just kidding!), and today they are simply known as the Orange. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syracuse_Orangeen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_the_Orange*If you're interested in why Syracuse was once the salt capital of the US, it's here: exploringupstate.com/story-syracuse-salt/

I am a bit nervous about this game tonight. But I don't have the sense of "doom and gloom" that I often have for games where UConn loses. There have been a few games where I didn't have the doom and gloom sense and we lost. But, in most cases I have that doom and gloom feeling when we lose. I am not saying I am psychic or prescient or have powers of precognition. But those feelings can be uncannily accurate at times. I think we will be okay tonight, if the fates are so kind.

Trying not to be nervous myself. Know where you are coming from. I'm just a touch...fretful. Would feel better if I knew Nika could play and be mostly herself.

Has anybody heard if our little ball o’ fire Croat will be a go? Pity if not, but best she rest up if not at full strength. Keep yer chin up, Ms Muhl. I know what it is like to want to keep fighting with just one good leg. But bigger games are to come if yer mates pull together and do what they are all capable of doing.

I’m shocked, typically we’d here from the on-site reporters if she was at shoot around. Mums the word??!!

Bad enough Geno isn't there. Bad enough it is Geno's birthday and the team will want to win for him to give him a happy birthday. Now Nika can't play. I hope the team doesn't get too into the "we have to win it for them" frame of mind. Huskies - just do what you do best, work together, and keep the unnecessary emotions out of your play. Just take care of business.
Hope Aubrey and Anna are ready. They are likely to split Nika's time.
LET'S GO HUSKIES!!!

Poor Nika. It is going to kill her to sit on the side. But she will cheer her team on with as much emotion as she has on the court.

A little bit of nerves starting. Not much, though. Think about the next game, when we get to see Geno with his team again.
