I read where UConn "fans" are wondering if Paige has "hit the freshman wall"? Seriously?? She scored 13 points, gave out 9 assists, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 4 steals. Oh, and she blocked one of Carda's shots. Yeah, sounds like a player Geno should bench...  Is someone going to ask this question every time Paige doesn't score 30+ points? In her last three games, Bueckers has scored 20, 11 and 12 points. She shot 17-33 or 52% overall and 5-13 or 39% from three range. She also added 25 assists in those 3 games. Yeah, put her on the bench... Go Paige..!! |

Some people don't understand that basketball is more than just scoring points in order to be effective and a great player. I am thrilled that Nika led the scoring last night. And that Christyn is playing with renewed confidence and has led the scoring recently. I don't understand people who demand and expect Paige to be the leading scorer every game. While she is capable of doing that, if others on the team have the hot hand in scoring, Paige is going to support that person. Paige is all about TEAM, not herself.

These same "fans" told the Courant that Paige is the best freshman in UConn history. Can't we just enjoy watching her, for heaven's sakes??

Paige is probably relieved to not scoring so many points. She's always thought of herself as a distributor even more than a scorer.
Early in the season, Geno would complain publicly that they need Paige to score more.
She's scoring less now, and he's not complaining. The team is jelling. The bigs are playing a lot better, Nika has emerged, and Christyn's steadied her game.

Paige does what has to be done. The kid is a winner, on a team full of winners. What I would say, if I were Geno talking about Paige, is "Please don't embarrass anyone by comparing them to Paige". Obviously he's much smarter than me so he won't say that. Yet.

Plus, she'd have had a few more assists if we hit all of our layups and didn't mishandle good passes??? So she basically played like Babe Ruth when he hit no home runs, but went 2-4 with a double, triple, 2 walks, scored 2 runs, stole 2nd 2X, made some great catches in the outfield, threw out a couple of runners from deep center field and then signed 100 autographs, ate 12 hot dogs, guzzled 8 beers and signed more autographs!! It doesn't take much to start to overcompensate
and if your natural motion and rhythm is in any way altered
Your shooting becomes a tad less consistent.
(That is ...for the general human population).
I'm sure E could write a treatise on the subject.

And I don't think Geno's exhorting that she shoot more than she now. At least I haven't heard him complain in the past 4 or 5 games, since Christyn's found her range and now with Nika shooting. Paige is Paige...she can usually make 40 or 15 as she chooses and what is good for the game and the team. D was the same.

I think hitting a wall is a bit harsh however I do think two things
1. She’s nicked up and clearly that doesn’t help.
2. I do think she’s exhausted, I think all the starters are. I think Paige and Evina are showing signs of wear and tear.
I think we will see these kids fight thru and probably be reinvigorated after the conference tourney. I almost wish there was no tourney.
When they had that 4 or 5 days off it really helped.
My only criticism is Geno doesn’t rest Paige enough when there up 20 plus against inferior talent.
