Geno's smirk when told of the No. 1 pick being traded at Seattle to get Lou I think is understood now. In the excerpt from the report below, it's Stewie, and wanting to keep her happy by bringing in one of her pals. I thought as much, did you. Oh, man, I should have put this in the WNBA section. So sorry.

....however, they immediately turned that Phoenix pick into Mikiah Herbert Harrigan from Minnesota, and the No. 1 into Katie Lou Samuelson and a 2022 second-rounder.
Having lost both Howard and Alysha Clark this offseason, the Storm had big holes to fill both on the wing and in the post, and you have to wear the most positive of rose-tinted glasses to feel like they’ve accomplished that task. Herbert Harrigan had a quiet rookie year in Minnesota, still needs to find her role in either the perimeter or post, and the Lynx happily moving on from her after one year isn't a positive sign. The No. 1 overall pick for Samuelson is the move that drew the most ire and shock. She hasn't impressed in her first two years in the WNBA, struggling to crack the rotation in both Chicago and Dallas, and not shooting particularly well when she did find minutes (30% from three-point range so far in her WNBA career).
Now on her third team in three years, there is still hope for Samuelson. She obviously impressed in college at UConn, and has even had her moments with Team USA. But you have to look hard. The best combo-forwards offer versatility and options to their coaches, like Napheesa Collier in Minnesota, performing successfully both in the paint and on the perimeter. However, there've also been countless players over the years who've fallen into that tweener gap. Too slow to defend anyone on the outside, too lightweight to battle inside, they're often successful in Europe but can't survive at either spot in the WNBA. Samuelson has yet to prove that she can produce positive results inside or out at WNBA level.
The defense for Seattle’s gamble is that if you aren’t a fan of potential draft options like Arella Guirantes or Rennia Davis, then maybe Samuelson has more of a chance to help fill their hole on the wing. The Storm are essentially saying they like her chances more than anyone in this class. With Breanna Stewart’s contract running out in a year, the move may also have been made in part to try to keep their superstar happy, adding her former college teammate to the squad. So there are angles where you can see the thought process for the Storm - it’s just hard to see the player Samuelson has been over the last two seasons as being worth the No. 1 overall pick, however weak the draft class.

I think they're thinking more a replacement for Sami Whitcomb at the two. This presumes a 4/3 role, which we can agree will be a tall order for Lou

I have such a hard time believing that Stewie will make a life/professional decision based on Lou's presence. Sure they played together for a year at UConn and Stewie gave her some emotional support when Geno was down on her. But Lou is not a very good professional player, and won't improve Stewie's team. OTOH, how else to explain a #1 for Lou?
so very, very weird.....

It's a business. Storm aren't going to pay good money and swap a #1 pick unless they feel Lou is bringing needed value. Maybe she just hasn't been in the right team before.

I think Lou has had her troubles with injury and missed fit. She's worth more than she's shown. But the article suggests it was between Charlie Collier and Lou. Remember, they have Ezi already

I'm a BIG Seattle fan, but losing Alysha Clark & Natasha Howard is really gonna weaken their defense! Moreover, Clark has led the WNBA in 3 point shooting % for the past 2 years!! I think Clark wanted to go to a team where she could do more?? Howard is a good player, but she has had serious off the court issues and she came into last season seriously out of shape? I know the pandemic was a factor, but if you're a professional athlete, you nedd to be prepared for each and every season? Seattle was in a tough bind because Clark, Howard and Sami Whitcomb wanted to play some where else! Seattle will re-build now and they have a great core of players! Lou is a very good 3 point shooter and she'll grow her game in Seattle; where the coaching staff actually cares about their players! 3 years ago they took a chance on Mercedes Russell, she's worked hard and she's now a decent player! If Lou puts in the work, she'll blossom and I have no doubt she'l do just that!! Herbert-Harrigan came in the trade from Minnesota and she's a very good, athletic defensive player! She'll get much better too! Candice Dupree is a 1 year deal and I wasn't too happy with it, but Seattle was in a bind? Her defense has always been lower shelf? Seattle has Ezi Magbegor and she's just gonna keep getting better!! Her Hoops Stats always does a good job explaining all different aspects of women's basketball!!!
