Paige knows it too. It's taken a while for her to embrace the role of star. But she's going to have to, at least this year. Next year gonna be a whole new ball game. I also love the way she credited not only her team but Geno for teaching her the tricks of the trade to get open and out of tough spots. So fantastic.

Mike Neighbors (Arkansas head coach) likes to tell a story about when he was an assistant for someone like Andy Landers or maybe it was Gary Blair. He said his role as an assistant was to make sure that the head coach had his Diet Coke. Not exactly a glamorous role, but definitely a role, sort of like the guy who brings out Billy Joel's piano. He said he made it his mission to be the best Diet Coke assistant the head coach ever had. He made sure to know whether the coach wanted it in a can, in a bottle or in a cup, with or without ice, and he made it his mission to make sure that when ever the head coach reached for his Diet Coke it was there. Even small roles can be carried out to perfection (or not) and paying attention to the details of a role, even if it seems small, can lead to bigger things. He told that story when he was still an assistant coach, and look where it led him.

Great post, Phil!
It's an essential lesson in life. It both challenges and valorizes all of us: we have to find our own meaning in what we do. Can't be swayed by how we imagine others value us, because we always imagine that wrongly anyway.
