Here is UConn's coaching staff listed on their site roster: uconnhuskies.com/sports/womens-basketball/rosterconfirmed by the Staff Directory; there are the expected overseers in the AD's office (NCAA compliance is a huge issue) and a couple of lower-level assistants: uconnhuskies.com/staff-directoryHappen to look at South Carolina's roster and was amazed at the number of high-paying jobs, including a full time Special Assistant to Dawn: I mean, is she a movie star? (don't bother answering: we know she is) More importantly, there is a Director of Recruiting operations. gamecocksonline.com/sports/womens-basketball/rosterMost times, I believe, one of the assistant coaches runs the recruiting for a team. But to have a separate director, wow.... USC is not a rich school. But they sure seem to plow a lot of money into their sports.... It's be interesting for someone who works in sports history to do an investigation of budgets relative to other school expenses.... (Notre Dame's is similar to UConn's: und.com/sports/wbball/roster/)

Academic Rankings UConn 63 SC 118. Dawn has the dough because they don't put a high value on academics.

All of the SEC schools are like this, it's the football money. They make so much in football they literally run out of things to spend the money on so they funnel it to other sports. It's no accident so many of their teams are ranked in so many different sports. They want for nothing. Except academics of course. With all the facility upgrades going on at UCONN and the hockey arena on the launch pad you would think we had a Top Ten FB program. What a great job the University, the Alums, Athletic Department and general fanbase have done to make it all happen. If UCONN was in the SEC Gampel would have been replaced 10 years ago with a 18,000 seat arena. Nothing wrong with Gampel, they just spend every dime they make. No thank you, I like what we've got. By the way, things are looking up in Football.

(Notre Dame's is similar to UConn's: und.com/sports/wbball/roster/)OK. South Carolina is not completely unusual - I see some others mention other SEC schools, Rutgers actually has some of those positions, including the assistant to the coach. In RU's case, its Betsy Yonkman that was an assistant coach when Vivian first arrived. Rutgers has a video person (scouting) who is actually related to former coach Grentz, FWIW. I do a chart each season of the (actual) coaches in the Power 5 and Big East and when I was flipping to school pages I certainly saw plenty of "extra" positions, including a surprising number of recruiting folks. What I'm not sure of is that they are necessarily well paid.

I haven't looked at other programs, but my sense is that there is one coach and 3 assistant coaches. Is that limited by NCAA rules or just convention? Is that what your chart says or do I have that wrong? But otherwise, I suppose it's what a coach can negotiate with the AD. Schools like UConn are under a lot of public scrutiny. Even Geno's salary, which is greater than Dawn's ultimately, is parsed out so that most of it is not technically salary and doesn't appear as such publicly.

You can only have the head coach and 3 assistants on the court at practice and only they can go on the road to recruit. So you have video people and directors of operations and assistants to the head coach who are all people that want to coach but have to be officially in support positions. If those guys are at big enough programs, it will absolutely lead them to getting hired as assistants eventually. BTW - I have a friend who is a coach at a mid major. He promised me years ago that when he is a head coach I can be his video guy, so I got that working for me.
