Thanks, semper! I thought this was the most interesting, since it's a pre-pandemic trend also:
Offensive rebounding is down This has been a trend across most levels of basketball for several years now, and it’s no different in women’s college hoops. Each year of the Her Hoop Stats database has seen a lower offensive rebounding rate than the last. This year’s sits at 31.8%, falling below 32% for the first time. As the three-point revolution continues to sweep the sport, more and more bigs are pulled away from the basket in order to stretch the floor. It’s great for spacing, but it takes offensive rebounders away from the rim. Additionally, many coaches don’t even try to get offensive rebounds anymore, opting instead to prevent opponents’ looks in transition. Kim Mulkey and Dawn Staley aren’t of that mindset, however — Baylor and South Carolina are the top two active teams in offensive rebounding rate, both pulling down over 45% of their own misses.

There are very few well-played close games in wcbb and close games are not necessarily exciting. Two equally bad teams can play a close game but I never see the end because I get tired of watching badly played basketball and change to another game.
If the media wants exciting & well-played basketball between equally talented teams then something has to be done about the conference structure. Compare the talent and coaching in the BE between the men and women. On the mens side there are a number of programs that have won NC's. On the women's side there is one. It kind of shows the commitment to wcbb isn't consistent across programs in the BE and that applies to most conferences.
In my perfect world D1 women's basketball would have 4 regional conferences and about 50 teams total. The other 300 teams would be D1A. Schedules would not be made by individual teams but by a central authority. No more dodging by coaches. That's what it would take to match the depth of talent in the mens game. My national tournament would be a double elimination with 8 teams.

I think the BE Women's coaches are several notches above their counterparts in the AAC. Let's give it a few years to see if any of them can rise in the new BE with UCONN in the fold. Not fair to judge them less than one season after the earthquake Negotiating your perfect world... -Regional conferences ... never happening. Too much money in play with networks and TV rights and Football overtones. An interesting thought experiment, though -Centralized scheduling would be beneficial. I think the "can't be rigged" feeling is one of the big reasons people watch the tournament. Need to leave a little room for player homecoming games, tradition, and such. -How about 100 teams and keep more teams in the NCAA field? I suspect we're more likely to go up to 256 than down to 8 teams. -Double elimination might be interesting. That would take more time, though. Play losers' brackets midweek??
