"For me, she is the best offensive player that I have ever seen, at least in the last 30 years that I have been either playing or calling women's college basketball," Lobo said on ESPN before South Carolina's win over Iowa in the national championship game. "When you get into the GOAT conversation, does she need to win a national championship to be considered the GOAT? I don't think so. I think she needs to win multiple national championships to be in that kind of conversation because when you look at the history of the game, Candace Parker won two championships at Tennessee, Diana Taurasi won three championships at UConn. ... Breanna Stewart won four championships, not only won four championships, she was the Most Outstanding performer in four Final Fours.
In the same article, Kelsey Plum underscores what Sue and D said about Clark's pro prospects: let's wait and see how her game translates. 247sports.com/article/caitlin-clark-skepticism-continues-from-stars-ahead-of-2024-wnba-draft-230166488/amp/

Is it shade if it's true? Hard to quantify greatness without consideration for winning and it's hard to give credit to winning when you don't win the biggest game of the year.

Actually it certainly can be. It originally starts with my wife's very, very favorite author: Young Edmund Bertram is displeased with a dinner guest's disparagement of the uncle who took her in: "With such warm feelings and lively spirits it must be difficult to do justice to her affection for Mrs. Crawford, without throwing a shade on the Admiral." Jane Austen, Mansfield Park (1814). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throw_shade

Guess that means we can rule out Paige as a GOAT too.

These GOAT debates are created by people who are paid to talk and write about the absurdities in order to attract an audience. They frost my enchiladas. The greatest women’s college basketball never won a championship in a team sport. Are we really going to compare CC’s supporting cast to Breanna’s or Parker’s? These were great teams. CC did not play on a great team. CC got her mediocre team to the NC game twice.
And while we talk about absurdities …..what in the wide wide world of false eyelashes is this talk about “CC tough time ahead in the pros”. So what..it’s an adjustment for all rookies. I’m just waiting for one of these talking heads to say “Sure, CC was a great college player but will she be a good grandmother?”

I’m just waiting for one of these talking heads to say “Sure, CC was a great college player but will she be a good grandmother?” It's a double edged sword. She would have never put up the numbers she did on a talented roster (especially UConn with their style of play), but she was unlikely to win the whole thing with a school like Iowa. She ultimately put up huge stats on a team that played an up-tempo style while allowing the ball to always be in her hands. Sure a player like Stewart had more talent around her, but she was still the best player on 4 straight national championship teams. What sort of numbers do you think players like Diana, Maya, Breanna or Paige could have put up at a lesser college program? Not all that long ago Plum was scoring over 30 points per game in college and it took her a while to have any sort of impact at the WNBA level.

And, does anyone remember this kind of extensive debate in the media and forums about the GOAT of WCBB before? I don’t. CC caused it. Not Brenna, Maya, Diana or Paige.

I think that first sentence is a complete shot in the dark. Players like Diana and Paige who are great passers, shooters and scorers in general absolutely would have had a chance to put up similar numbers as the focal point in a similar system. Especially with 4 years to grow into that role. I mean Megan Gustafsen put up 28 points per game in that system and is at best an average role player in the WNBA. I think a lot of people are going to be disappointed with CC in the WNBA, not because she won't be a very good player, but because they have set their standards for her as the greatest college player of all time that will dominate at the next level. Because I was curious I converted Paige's freshman numbers to account for a 40% usage rate instead of her 25% that she had and the numbers I got was 32 points and 9 assists. That was just as a freshman and I don't think anyone would say she was an all around better player then versus now.

If these players played there…… you are certainly entitled to your opinions but it’s one player who did it. One player with the records. One player who took a team with average players to 2 NCs. I have no idea what happens to CC in the pros. Since the games are unwatchable for me, I don’t care. Great college players have been busts in the pros and some have had Hall of Fame careers. For me…wake me up when the College season starts again.

I can at least back up my opinions with numbers and making adjustments for usage their stats become eerily similar with Paige actually coming out slightly ahead. Though to be fair Paige's efficiency could fall off with that high of usage, but like the rest of this discussion, who knows..

CC has certainly made a lot of waves. She is certainly like Plum. Both had a whole team dedicated to getting her the ball where she wanted it. So it will be an adjustment without getting into a discussion of defense. No denying the great shooting prowess though. I hope all the internet buzz of WNBA hostility to her fades away.

I’m so utterly sick & tired of CC. She may have scored the most points in history, but at least one of the giants she passed was before the 3pt shot was an option. And just because you’re a beast on offense doesn’t make greatest. Diana & Maya managed to win multiple championships while still making other players around them better & didn’t have to score half their team’s points in order to win.
Ooooh, hold the presses, they retired CC’s # at Iowa already!!! Good thing she didn’t go to UConn … not only would she have had to play defense, but her # doesn’t get retired until she’s in the HOF. With no championships … she might make it as a contributor, tho …
