I am fine with the bolded section. Also, it should be parental leave not Maternity leave. Firefighter, Police Officer, Letter Carrier, should become the norm, too. These are simple, already carry the intended meaning, and do not require grammatical gyrations. I know it is inevitable, but I still feel my mother the teacher's wrath when I try to use "they" instead of him or her. Besides, "they" has a meaning already and third person singular isn't it. I would prefer we make up a new word for this, maybe "isk" or something similarly short and simple. The first one is taking things too far. Amen is not a gender term and has never had a gender connotation. It just happens to contain a familiar syllable. It originates in Hebrew and means "let [or may] it be so", often shortened to "so be it". |

I don't understand the prayer thing at all. It was said by a minister - who certainly knows what Amen means. Perhaps he was making a point?
The bolded section is fine - it probably simplifies things.

I saw a recent news report about a family who is raising their child gender neutral (non-binary). I was so confused by the "they" and "them" throughout the whole story, thinking every time the mother (parent) was talking about a third party and not the parent's (mother's) child. I am sure younger people will adapt very quickly but it is going to take me a while.
English teachers everywhere are thinking "English and grammar is hard enough to teach with the current rules!"

The Amen thing is just stupid. The rest makes perfectly good sense to me.
Gender is deeply embedded in Indo-European languages.
Hungarian is not Indo European, but Finno-Ugric. So for example (from the net):
In Hungarian there is no distinction between genders, there is no masculine and feminine pronoun like the English he and she, we use the same pronoun ő for both genders. The personal pronoun that stands for I – én, is only capitalized when it stands at the beginning of a sentence.
My mother was a high school English teacher. The use of they for he/she would have made her quite upset. But you can understand why people do it.
