Based on votes of Michelle Smith, Mechelle Voepel and Graham Hays. I have no problem with Loyd winning this but I do have a problem with some of the wording used by Smith. Stewart has had a terrific year and I wouldn't say it didn't match the hype. Her team is #1 and she has played great in big games, including beating ND and the then #1 team in the country. Loyd started the season stronger but Stewart finished it stronger. That's okay Stewie. As CD said to Diana in 2004, "don't worry, you'll win the big one." In-season performance trumped preseason hype.
Notre Dame's Jewell Loyd is espnW's National Player of the Year, which might be something of a surprise considering that Connecticut's Breanna Stewart widely regarded as the best women's college player in all the land.
But while Stewart was adjusting to a new role with the Huskies, and Connecticut once again rolled through the American Conference without much resistance, Loyd has propelled Notre Dame to another stellar season.
The junior shooting guard came up big in the biggest games, and led the Irish to another ACC title in one of the most competitive conferences in the country.

ESPNW isn't one of the big 4. (i.e. it won't get you on the wall)
But congrats to Loyd. She's had a nice year.

The Huskies would roll through every conference without much resistance.

Jewell Loyd is a great basketball player. Her job is to score points. 1. Notre Dame NEEDS Loyd to score. She has taken 504 shots this season. TWICE the next player's shots. 2. Loyd has led N.D. in scoring 22 times this season. The rest of the team led in scoring 11 times. 3. She averages 31.4 minutes per game on the court. She takes more than 15 shots per game.
Stewie is a better player than Loyd. Her role on UConn is do many more things than just score. 1. Stewie has taken 420 shots, the next player, KML, has taken 327. Tuck has taken 322. 2. Stewie led UConn in scoring 11 times. The rest of the team led 22 times. 3. Stewie averages 27.5 minutes per game. She takes 12.7 shots per game. 4. Both Loyd and Stewie have 102 assists. Stewie has many more rebounds, many more blocks and even more steals. 5. Stewie has fewer turnovers, as well....
Congrats to Loyd...! But, we'll keep Stewie..

The voters all work for ESPN. ESPN wants to hype a UConn-Notre Dame NC game. So what better way than poking UConn nation? If you think these three voted their honest opinions rather than the will of their employer I've got a bridge in NYC to sell to you.

Once Stewie turned her game up, I really though that she and Jewell would share the various NPOY awards. I would be stunned if Stewie is shut out.

If you put Stewart and Lloyd on the same team Lloyd will be looked at as MoJeff or KML. You put Lloyd on UConn beside Mojeff and it aint even close. Bottom line its Stewie and no body else. IMO will Muffets attitude last season when McBride wasn't the POY but Stewie was along with Muffets comments of how Lloyd is POY this season is the reason imo why Lloyd got it. Muffet was out to get a POY this season and she started last season when Stewie got it. Remember the way she acted at the ceremonies.

I'll say it again, Loyd is the best offensive player in the country, but Stewie is the best all around player in the country.

I'll say it again, Loyd is the best offensive player in the country, but Stewie is the best all around player in the country. After looking at the stats I don't think Jewell is even the best offensive player, maybe the best scorer. MoJett is much better offensively in so many ways.

Kelsey Plum and Kelsey Mitchell are outstanding offensive players as well.
