I need a therapy session, so you're it folks. I was told over the weekend that Tuesday I was to walk into Cardiology with a heart monitor order and they'd set me up. I walk in and give the order to 1 of 5 registrars (I thought we were pretty healthy here in Montana!). He takes the order, looks me up, and says okay a nurse will call you to set up an appointment. The systems department must be a team of 8 year olds! These kinds of things are everywhere in hospitals far and wide. I have experienced this kind of stuff every time I have spent time in a hospital. And these cliches, whether missing orders for testing or pharmacy orders or you name it, well they can have serious consequences for the patient. We have a rule in our family that another family member is always with you, including and particularly at night. Anyway I got my nurse call and she was nice but wanted to have the monitor company send me their handy dandy kit, which would arrive in 7 to 10 days. The order called for me to be wearing the darn thing yesterday. I allowed as how that wouldn't do. She finally figured it out. You come in and we'll set you up. And that I did this morning. Nurse went over it with blistering pace. It was like she earned a bonus if she did it under 5 minutes. But she pointed out a comprehensive booklet of patient instructions, which, on arriving home, I discovered did not match the unit I have plastered on my chest! Ever seen the movie Hospital with Geore C. Scott? It's an absolute condemnation of hospitals and funny as hell! A little funny: On the way home I suddenly had an absolute yearning for a Big Mack, Fries and Vanilla Shake. It occurred to me I was now wrapped in the warm embrace of Crestor and the statin would allow me to indulge, right? I drove on by. Ugh, I understand the frustration. My husband has faced communication issues between doctors, pharmacies, Quest (blood work). Most commonly the doctor says they will send the prescription to the pharmacy, and the pharmacy never receives it. No problem, it is just Eliquis that will help prevent my AFib husband from having a stroke. Or they submit a requisition for blood work...only for him to go to Quest and they have no record of it. The odd thing is, I never have these problems with my doctors. It must be the cardiac practices are overworked so maybe a little "nudge" to a patient here and there to clear a case off their books is justified. Oh, your dark humor is spanking good Chappy. It's suspicion of AFib that has me on the monitor. I've had little flutter rolls on occasion for decades and have always been told it's nothing. Now?

Kudos for seeing the humor in the situation and for standing your ground in self advocating for them to do the right thing.

Epilogue: The cardiac signal transmitter back to the mothership is a specially programmed android phone and I have to stay within 10 feet of it. But to make that easy they have included a belt clip holster. Small catch: they have stuck the phone on burliest otter like shell I have ever seen. Net net: I guess I'll have to emulate every Hollywood glamour queen and epoxy the phone to my hand.
You just can't make this stuff up!

So, with the "mini-stroke" event last week my diet is getting even duller! Anyone have a brand recommendation on a rice cooker?

So, I called my daughter in Connecticut just a while ago and she allowed as how they had a little excitement today. 4:30 in the morning she sees a car at the beginning of her driveway. She gets up and in her jammies strolls down with a flashlight. I do mean down. The house is on a hill. Anyway, there is a guy sort of thrashing around in the woods next to the driveway. Black, English accent blurts out he's looking for his key chain, gets in the car and takes off. Apparently the key chain did not include his car key. Daughter fetches a rake and rakes the leaves where he was fumbling about. Well, looky look, an automatic pistol and two loaded magazines.
She posits that on a previous day/night he was running from the police and ditched the stuff planning to retrieve it later. As you might imagine I have a couple, three things about this I'm not keen on in this scenario.
Of course, I seized the opportunity to pursuade them to arm themselves. I'm still working on it.
Oh, PS: The license plates were stolen, so likely the car too.

It might have been better if she HAD been armed while strolling out there, and if she KNEW the police were on their way. Thank God he fled, thank God she is okay. Sure this did nothing to improve your health! Your daughter sure is brave!

Yeah, I am not pro arming. But am pro calling the police. This is a very scary tale. She is pretty lucky, I'd say.

ouch, that was a scary thing. I don't know why your daughter went out in the dark to someone she didn't know, doing gawd knows what - Yikes. I think she should hold on to that gun and learn how to use it. that little encounter could've gone so wrong. remember, when seconds count, the cops are minutes away. also, never, ever pull a gun out unless you are prepared and ready to fire it. It is not a responsibility to be taken lightly.
While I have a CT concealed permit, I don't carry. Guns are heavy and cumbersome. Nevertheless, if someone breaks into my house, I will defend myself and mine. I will not go outside with one unless it's to practice at the range.
If I may ask, where in CT does your daughter live?

Sure this did nothing to improve your health! Your daughter sure is brave! Whenever she comes out for a visit we head out to the gun range with an embarassingly large array of bang bangs. She and her sister always embarrass me with their proficiency with hand guns and long guns. Statistically women are better shooters than men. But at the range once or twice a year doesn't get you ready to confront an unknown foe in the dark. In our chat she said the incident convinced her to take up my offer. Some of you will shudder. I have 84 short and long guns. She wants her favorite long gun, which is a SKS; one of a collection of 9. I like historic weapons. Her favorite is a Chinese model she calls Chop Suey. Her sister's favorite she calls Stir Fried Rice. Russia brought this semiautomatic 10 shot rifle into service in the last year of World War II and it was supplanted by the AK47 by the time the Korean War came around. But the SKS was manufactured in various Russian satellites for quite some time as well as in China (in huge #es) and Viet Nam. It was the primary battle rifle of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army.

She's in upper Fairfield County. Me, I took the course for concealed carry, but I decided not to get the license. I didn't trust myself enough to carry, being the hot headed red neck a few of you may justifiably think I am. Besides, here in MT I figure there are plenty with a CC walking around to leave us all pretty well protected. However, my night stand gun is a Springfield XDM 9mm 18 shot. Hey, in the dark I need 18! The business about put the gun here and the bullets there entirely defeats the purpose of having it. No minors in my house. That changes everything. It can be dealt with with a fingerprint lock single gun safe.

Note: if under siege, ask permission to join militia at Rocky Ranch. No shudders here, just amazed at size of arensal. must take a good deal of maintenance. In all seriousness, sounds like you are prepared, and living out in (I am guessing) a not densely populated area, that is a prudent approach.

There are guns I haven't fired in years, but they still need a light cleaning and oiling every now and then. Luckily our average humidity is low year round. That's a big help. I'm sick enough to consider gun maintenance a hobby. A good deal of my attraction to guns is an appreciation of them as a form of sculpture. Precise, crisp lines. The more modern long guns ... not so much. Ugly, bumpy, utilitarian and sinister. Another subject: yesterday we had a very rare event around here. The sky dumped just shy of 2 inches of rain. This in what is already a wet late spring. Farmers will be worrying about their spring wheat and first cut hay soon if this keeps up.

I really, really hate guns. Haven't fired one in several decades. But I can understand the multiple appeal: why some feel safer with them and why some really treasure them as objects. I'm that way with film cameras. I just can't stop buying them. And I shoot them lots and lots and often actually aim at people.

Went out on an errand this AM and had not gone far when coming the other way were 4 very expensive low slung sports cars. Never seen a pack like that before. The puzzle was soon answered when coming the other way were a shiny old Packard and a bright yellow 30s work truck. Somewhere to the west there's a car show. Returning 25 minutes or so later I saw another yellow truck and what at that distance looked to be a Model T. Bringing up the rear was one of my old favorites, what I call a 2d generation Thunderbird in powder blue. The original T'bird was too toy like for me, but the second had the size and lines to be a sweet car. I gladly slowed down to 40 to cruise with them for a while.

2 inches of rain? WOW. We haven't had a good soaker in 3 weeks. Could use it, as we are heading into drought, but also to clean the air of the Canadian wildfire smog. Happy to say that the CT native strawberry crop is in, and they are scrumptious!Bless our local growers and farmstands.

Spent my early years in Westchester Cty and it seemed to me we had too many droughts. Love to know the weather pattern that produces this is coastal New England.

Postscript on daughter's night time adventure. The cops got an id off the gun. It traced to a home invasion robbery with the perp just recently getting out of jail, having done 3 years. Cop came by daughter's house to tell her yesterday. He is violating parole; no known actual address. So he got out of jail ad went right back to work.

My daughter who crafts Montana stone & fossil items, lamps, games, etc had her first weekend in Big Sky and did very well. Yes, there is big money and huge money in Big Sky. And hotels full of vacationers. An owner of a retail clothing boutique sidled over to her and told her to charge more money and you'll get more sales. She found a hole in her business plan. Offer shipping. Lamps don't fit in luggage. She'll be down there every weekend. She's at a fair in Bozeman on Wednesday. She'll have a booth at Bozeman's Sweet Pea Festival 1st week of August - a truly huge arts and crafts fair, open air music and Shakespeare etc. And she just was given shelf space in one of Bozeman's swankier craft stores. Proud pop had to tell you.
