We're having a quiet Christmas, just me and my husband here in CT. We were going to go to Iowa, but sister-in-law getting over back surgery, so thought it might not be optimal time to visit. Pretty glad we made that call, tho, as it is going to be snowy and the coldest Christmas in 50 years there. So we will have some nice dinners with some wine on the Eve and Christmas day, and talk to all the relatives in Iowa, greater Chicago (his side), and the Netherlands (one of my nephews and his family) by phone or Zoom. Will enjoy begin off work for almost a week- starting this Friday. A few more things to wrap, and food to pick up on Saturday (already ordered) and then (hopefully) a nice tranquil holiday (fingers crossed). On edit: this is why the decision to stay home was a good one... nypost.com/2022/12/20/bomb-cyclone-expected-to-hit-us-prompting-airlines-to-issue-travel-waivers/

Christmas Eve at my step-cousins, Christmas day at my step-moms. Have a lot of cooking to do - deviled eggs, caramel popcorn, maybe quiche for breakfast.
Busy, but nice.

Sounds terrific, Chappy! We're in Palo Alto, watching our grandson as our kids party in Mexico. And celebrating Hanukkah with him here. Very special. Then fly home in time for Christmas with the rest of the family, which, because we're Jewish, means Chinese takeout. :-) Not Jewish, but both my home town and my wife's home town had significant Jewish populations (reform, mostly). In any case, it was notorious - Chinese food (not necessarily take-out) and a movie for Christmas. Since I managed a movie theatre (where I met my wife) I can vouch for this, at least in the 1980's.

This morning -38 degrees and I have no water!!! The chances of getting a plumber? I figure the phones are off the hook. Yesterday -18 and the snow service did not show up (4-5 inches over night) and who is to blame them. Not safe to work outside. Wouldn't happen to have a Florida place for rent?

Thing is I think the water issue is somewhere up the line.

And here in CT people are freaking out over single digit lows and a brief period of strong wind that might put the real feel into sub zero territory. What a coddled bunch! Spend a winter in any of the northern states not on the east coast (Montana, North/South Dakota, Minnesota) if you really want something to complain about. Rocky, I feel for you. It is bad enough being that cold, but no water for a hot shower or cooking up some soup? That is downright cruel.

do you have a wood stove? here is moderately cool CT, I got one after Superstorm Sandy. Sleeping in 40 degree temps with a fireplace that smokes was not my idea of fun, therefore a wood stove (that doesn't smoke!) that heats the whole house was my next purchase. It was worth it, even if I haven't yet needed it. Still can keep the cost of heating in a more do-able range.
Stay warm, my friends.

But -38 is so so cold and with my luck I'd lock myself out. One of my daughters brought me 4 gallons of water she got at the local gas station. Get this: she gassed up and at the first pump she tried it started to pump gas and wouldn't shut off. Why she wanted to shut it off I don't know. She hit it on a barrier and it stopped. 2nd pump was fine. She went inside and told the lead cashier and got a real defeated look out of her. Even for here this is rare cold.

9.5 hour power outage. Got pretty chilly in the house. Power back on. It was a “man made” outage. Yes, the tree across the street fell and part was touching the wires. But a tree contractor came out at midnight and in the process of cutting down the tree cut the power line as well. They had one job…thank goodness our power company had planned and had out of area crews standing by. Much thanks to FBM Power out of Boston for getting the lights and heat back on.

We were in California and scheduled to fly home on Friday during the heart of the blizzard. Astonishingly, despite so many canceled flights (on Alaska Airlines), we took off on time and landed at Logan a few minutes early (nothing like the Storm of the Century to provide a strong tailwind). We got very, very, very lucky. It was a mess for many, and, of course, especially in Buffalo, a tragedy.
My wife and I both caught our grandson's cold. Tough for him. Maybe worse for us old folks. I'm not used to catching colds. None since the pandemic! We've over the worst of it.

It's 51 degrees here and some places have flood warnings. -38 to 51 in a little over 4 days. We are well positioned to get hammered by Pacific and Polar weather.

I've taken a BB break since walking out on the ND game. I just couldn't take it and I am way way behind in my work anyway. So I vowed to come back when Azzi comes back, and let's see how we both do. We had a great holiday in Denver and just missed the storm driving driving out and hopefully will be OK driving back to the Bend. Great to hear that everyone here is OK. Our cottage in upstate NY near Syracuse has missed the worst of it too. So sad about Buffalo.

bulkey I just checked the Buffalo News and the mayor is talking about "reprehensible looting of stores." Very disheartening.

I remember the loss at Stanford to end the UConn win streak. Game went to overtime and UConn just didn't pull it out, and Stanford won by two points on the last shot. I had to walk out with my UConn gear for all to see - and shame me. It was painful.

Yeah, it was simply horrible. I went with an ND friend and bragged our team up and pointed out all the players. And then Azzi left the game and I knew and we just couldn't recover. There was an impenetrable lid on the basket and none of our plays were working and I could see what was happening and I apologized to my friend, who was very kind to me under the circumstances, and went for a long walk around the lakes and took my vow: when and if Azzi comes back so do I. And I have some very complicated stuff to write so it's a good decision. Wanted to check in though to see if people were OK what with the storm and all.

bulkey I just checked the Buffalo News and the mayor is talking about "reprehensible looting of stores." Very disheartening. Sad. While I never went as far as Buffalo, my work did take me to Syracuse and Rochester. Considering I was "the auditor" I wasn't all that friendly with staff at our locations, but I actually got along with the folks in those 2 cities quite well. I understood from them that all those cities (where I wouldn't necessarily have expected it) had deeply impoverished and (relatively) crime ridden sections, Buffalo included. I knew cities like Chicago and other really, really large cities did (heck, I had to work in some shady areas of Chicago) but was shocked about the upstate NY area. And this was 20 to 30 years ago. I can't imagine it has gotten better, it is sad.

Especially when people are scared (war especially), they take comfort in what they can grab for free.

Lots of neighborly and heartening things are happening, too, including a fund for people who suffered during the storm. I gave them $20 yesterday, and then one of my neighbors shoveled out my car. Goodness being paid forward.
